Re: Rylee and Lem
Lem vaguely remembered Nic mentioning a dreamwalker. They didn’t actually do a ton of talking when they were together, usually. She didn’t think much had come of it, if anything. Which sucked for them. But what could you do? In Lem’s experience, people were mostly just along for the ride of reality. Control was an illusion, life was chaos, as she’d said. You could try to paddle against the current and tire yourself out, or you could see where it took you. “Yeah, not much turns out easy,” she agreed wryly. “At least you got this handled though, right? One crazy bullshit thing down.” It felt strange and awkward to try and be optimistic for someone else, but Lem was giving it a shot.
Rylee wasn't entirely she had anything handled. But she was trying, and right now that's all she could do. "Yeah," she said with a small smile. "Except it's monthly crazy bullshit. But like you said, maybe eventually it'll be boring and routine bullshit instead of crazy." She did appreciate Lem's optimism, especially tonight. Rylee wasn't sure she would be able to fully relax until morning when Carson was himself again, but it helped to have other people around, like Nic and Zania. Lem was a stranger to her, but she didn't give Rylee any bad vibes, and Rylee found herself trusting her, and Vex, with what was happening. "So you're both here to stay?" Rylee asked, settling back in her chair now that her glass was empty. "For good?"
There was always the chance that things could go sideways and crazy tonight, that people could get hurt, or end up dead. Lem thought the odds were pretty low though, considering how prepared they were this time. She was just glad that Vex was in the clear. There definitely wasn’t room for two werewolves in that cage, and he would’ve been her priority. It all seemed to be working out though, so Lem wasn’t going to jinx it with anxiety. She gave Rylee a shrug at the question, smiling faintly. “Who knows,” she said. “Nothing’s for good with us so far. We go where we’re led. But I don’t think we’ll be leaving anytime soon.”
Rylee had considered that kind of lifestyle before. Just packing up and wandering, letting instinct or desire take her places. It had been so tempting. But then Carson had been hurt and come home and there was no way she could leave him. So she was still here, and she would probably grow old and die here too. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, if she had Carson with her. "I would say I hope you like it here, but this town is fucked up," Rylee said. "Not that I don't appreciate what you both are doing for Carson right now. I just... well, it's not Mayberry, obviously." If Vex and Lem left, what did that mean for Carson? Would he still have their basement to stay in every month? Rylee supposed that was something to ask when and if it happened. Right now it seemed like Lem would be staying a while, so Carson would be all right.
Lem laughed a little, idly spinning her glass around between her fingers. “It is fucked up,” she agreed. It hadn’t taken long for her to figure that one out. “But we’re fucked up too, so.” Lem shrugged. They’d been called to Point Pleasant for reasons that hadn’t quite made themselves clear yet. Becoming a werewolf safe haven was probably just a side quest, but everything had ripples, it all overlapped, and maybe the connections they made here tonight would come in handy later. Carson was already linked to Nic, and Nic was linked to Lem, so things were already connecting. “I like it more than anywhere else we’ve landed so far,” she added. “We’ve got a house, no more sleeping in the van, we’ve got people now, Vex is finding a purpose ... it’s going okay.”
