Re: Rylee and Lem
She plucked up the vodka bottle for herself and poured a few fingers of it into a glass. Lem took a sip of it before she answered, weighing whether she ought to be honest or not. Besides being related to a werewolf, this girl seemed really ‘normal,’ and if this was going to be a necessary monthly occurrence, Lem didn’t want to scare her off. But at the same time, it was a huge favor and this was their house. “We were in the psych ward at the same time,” she said finally, looking flatly at Rylee and giving a little shrug. “He saved my life when I got out, so we just ... stayed together.” She wasn’t sure if Nic had told Rylee anything about their abilities, so she didn’t launch into how Vex was her guiding light, he was a Prophet and Lem was his Conduit. Rylee didn’t look like someone who would understand.
It probably wasn't the smart thing to do to drink vodka straight, but Rylee didn't much care right then. She poured herself a small glass and hoped it would make her relax a little. Rylee was glad to have something else to focus on, and she sipped from her glass as Lem spoke. Her only real reaction to hearing Lem and Vex were both in the same psych ward was a subtle arch of her brow. It was surprising, and yet... not. She knew it wasn't right to judge people based on their looks, but Vex at least was a bit eccentric. It also wasn't her place to ask questions. They were giving Carson a safe place to stay right now and that was more important. "It's incredibly generous of you two to do this," Rylee said instead. "I know how dangerous this could be. Have you ever dealt with anything like this before?"
The defiant part of Lem was a tiny bit disappointed that Rylee didn’t probe any further. She sometimes liked to tell people that she’d been put away for violent attacks, even if she never told anyone why. Or rarely did, anyway. Nic knew now, and she’d found it to be kind of a comfort. Someone besides Vex knew her. But Rylee didn’t ask, and Lem didn’t want to come off as too aggressive. The lady already had enough stressing her out. Which was why Lem lied and shook her head. “Not really,” she said, thinking of the dismembered body in the barrels below them. Nic had disguised them with magic to just look like old suitcases, as promised, but it was still a little nerve-wracking. “We tried hunting one down last month. To lure it into the house and the cage so it wouldn’t kill anyone. But it didn’t work.” Lem shrugged. “This is what Vex built it for though, so ... glad it’s being put to good use.” She took another swallow.
Was the werewolf they tried to lure in Carson? Would they have killed him if he attacked? Maybe it was the fact that Lem had used the word hunting. Rylee's heart was beating a little faster now and she took another drink of the vodka to try and smooth out the anxiety she was feeling. She had tried really hard to be calm and strong for Carson, because he was going through so much, but now that it had happened, she sort of wanted to just allow herself one freak out before pulling herself together again. Rylee wasn't entirely glad Vex's cage was being put to good use, but she understood what Lem meant. Carson, and everyone else, was safer down there than anywhere else. "So you think there are other werewolves out there right now?" There had to be, if one had bitten Carson. But how many were there? Who were they? Rylee thought of Sadie Gaines and wondered if there would be any other horrible deaths to be reported in the morning.
