Who: Elodie and Jasper
When: Sunday, December 3rd, late afternoon
Where: Their backyards
Status: Complete
With her mom off doing whatever she did in her free time, and her grandma snoring away upstairs, Elodie took her cigarettes out back and plopped down on the back porch, bundled up in her jacket with a beanie shoved down over her ears. It wasn’t as cold as it could probably be, but it was still cold. She supposed she could have probably gotten away with smoking downstairs in her room with the window open, but her grandma had a nose like a fucking bloodhound and Elodie didn’t want to risk waking her up with the smell of cigarettes.
After lighting up, Elodie pulled out her phone to give herself something to do that wasn’t staring at the shed in the backyard. She didn’t mind winter, but she wished it was still summer. At least with warm weather she could people watch. There was no one out today and the only noise to interrupt her thoughts was a dark barking in the distance. Fuck, she missed New York, and her brother. If he were around she would at least be having a lot of fun.
Jasper had slept in until around noon, as per usual for a Sunday, and shoveled some cereal into his face in the kitchen for ‘lunch.’ It seemed that Amelia and Gavin had both gone out, maybe to church, so the house was quiet. Besides the dogs, who were whining near the back door. Figuring they wanted him to come outside with them, Jasper went back to his room to put on some pj pants and pulled his hoodie over his head. He slipped on some warm house shoes, grabbed his cigarettes, and stepped out onto the back porch.
It had been almost a week since the incident with Elodie and his taped conversation with Ruby. Jasper had made up with Jules, barely talked to Ruby about it, and had managed not to confront Elodie in school. He didn’t need to get kicked out, he kept reminding himself. He needed to graduate, and getting into it with some girl in the hallway wouldn’t be a step in that direction. The backyard, though? That was fair game. While Max and Rude dashed out into the yard, Jasper glanced around and spotted the smoke from Elodie’s cigarette drifting above the top of the fence. His jaw clenched, that anger bubbling up again, even if it wasn’t nearly as intense as it had been that day.
He made his way over to the fence and peered over it. “Hey,” he barked. “Fuck you, by the way.”
Elodie heard the dogs next door go running into the yard and brought the cigarette back up to her lips. She honestly hadn't given a lot of thought to Jasper or Ruby or his girlfriend since the week before and had nearly forgotten she had sent Jules Cooper anything at all. Her mind had been preoccupied with other fun things. But the sound of the dogs had triggered her memory and she wasn't at all surprised when Jasper's appeared at the fence. Elodie looked up from her phone and studied him for a moment as she took a drag and then tugged the cigarette from her lips to exhale the smoke. "Yeah? Why's that?" She knew why, but that didn't matter. People tended to blame her for their bullshit, and she kind of enjoyed it.
Jasper glared at her. He’d done some fucked up stuff in his life, but he’d always been loyal to his friends. Granted, he didn’t have many, and he and Elodie didn’t know each other besides bullshitting around during a few rides to and from school, but he’d still thought they were cool. “You know why,” he snapped, not buying that clueless act for a second. She knew exactly what she did. “You’re a goddamn bitch, so stay away from my girlfriend, my friends, and my fucking family, understand me? If I ever find out about you taping any fucking thing that happens over here again, you’re gonna regret it.”
Elodie stretched out her legs down the bottom step and considered that for a moment. 'Bitch' wasn't the worst thing she'd ever been called. That didn't bother her either, but most things didn't. Then she shrugged and brought her cigarette back to her lips as she got to her feet. Standing on the porch made her a bit taller, so she could see him better over the fence. "I guess if you keep all your fascinating shit inside, you won't have to worry about it, right? If you do something stupid, can't blame other people for seeing it." And he couldn't blame her for watching. Elodie didn't think much about privacy. If shit was happening somewhere she could see it, then it wasn't really private.
Jasper bristled a bit, because while he understood why Jules had been so upset, he hadn’t actually done anything stupid or wrong, just badly handled a bombshell he hadn’t been expecting. “This is our property, so you mind your own fucking business, you crazy bitch,” he said. “I can blame you plenty for violating my fucking privacy and trying to meddle in my life for no fucking reason. I never did shit to you, we were cool. It didn’t work, by the way. But fuck you forever anyway, go choke on a bag of dicks.” Feeling like he’d said everything he needed to, and that if he stayed there much longer he would start really getting pissed, Jasper turned to cross the short distance back to the door. He would keep everything important inside from now on, and he’d warned Amelia to do the same, but that didn’t make Elodie in the right.
"A bag seems like overkill. I think I'd probably only need one dick to choke on," Elodie said, as he flipped her off and walked away. She brought her cigarette back to her lips, feeling the laughter burn in her throat. The truth was, she probably was a crazy bitch. Most people who knew her would say so. But Jasper didn't know that she always had a reason for doing the shit she did. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn't. But it always entertained her, and that was the important thing. It was probably going to be fun living next to Jasper, even if he didn't think so.
