Who: Brynn and Liam
When: Late evening, Friday, December 1st
Where: Their respective bedrooms
Status: Complete
After a full day of school, cheer practice and then hanging out with Victoria and some friends, Brynn was thoroughly exhausted by the time she drove home from her cousin’s house. She could have just walked, but it had been raining all day and she really didn’t feel like looking like a drowned raccoon by the time she got back home. It was late but she could hear her parents in the other room watching television so she shouted that she was home before hurrying upstairs to her bedroom.
Tossing her bag on a chair in the corner, Brynn changed out of her semi-damp clothes and into warm pajamas. She washed her face, brushed her hair and then flopped down on her bed to check her text messages. As she scrolled through, she felt something draw her attention to the wall just above her bed. The gorgeous deer mask hung there, watching her. Okay, it wasn’t watching her, because masks didn’t watch people, but it certainly felt like it was. Brynn stared at it for a moment before setting her phone down and climbing up on her knees to lift it carefully from the hook. She sat back down and lifted the mask to her face, realizing that it was probably a silly thing to do, but there was no one around to make fun of her, so who cared?
The weather might have been miserable, but Liam wasn’t going to let a little rain get him down, not on his birthday. He’d gotten his curfew pushed back as far as he could to hang out with his friends, an evening that consisted almost entirely of pizza, video games, and whatever beer they’d been able to round up between them. It wasn’t much, but it left Liam feeling pleasantly buzzed by the time he got home, where he hurried up to his room and flopped down on his bed before his mom could ask too many questions.
He was enjoying that fuzzy, world-spinning feeling when he glanced to the side, his eyes drawn to the wolf mask sitting on his dresser. It had been such an impulse buy, but with the asking price within his range there was no way he could say no. He’d had to have it, even if all it did was sit on his dresser, though tonight it was more than that. Liam rose from the bed, feet a bit unsteady as he picked up the mask and gave into the urge to put it on.
For a few moments Brynn was looking at her bedroom through the eyes of the mask. Everything seemed much brighter somehow, almost serene, which was probably a strange sort of feeling to have about her bedroom. But then everything changed. The room shifted into something completely unfamiliar to her. With a soft inhale of breath, Brynn lowered the mask quickly to look around, but it was her bedroom again. Confused, Brynn brought the mask back up to her face and cautiously looked through it again. A louder, sharper noise emitted from her throat, because it was not her room! It was someone else's. There was a lot of blue. A large desk with a computer. Some sports medals and pictures. Brynn scrambled off of her bed, stumbling a little as her hands were holding the mask to her face and she wasn't looking at where she was going. She walked, but the desk didn't get any closer. It was like she wasn't controlling the movements here, just watching. It definitely looked like a boy's room. "What the hell," Brynn whispered. Her heart was beating fast now, and she knew the smart thing to do would be to drop the mask, but this was just... bizarre. And kind of strangely awesome? She couldn't quite tell yet because she had no idea whose room she was looking at, or why.
The room seemed to spin a little as Liam brought his mask up to his face, the images he saw through the eyeholes jumping from somewhere else to his room, then back to the other place again. It was weird and disorienting and definitely not something that had happened when he’d put the mask on in the shop. One hand dropped to the bed to steady himself, while the other held the mask in place as Liam tried to figure out what he was looking at. A girl’s room, definitely not his, but where? And why? “Hello?” he said, feeling a little silly, but what if someone could hear him? Things got even weirder seconds later when suddenly he was moving, but not. His fingers clutched the covers on his bed, just to make sure he hadn’t moved, yet it felt like he was wearing some kind of virtual reality goggles. Slowly, he slid off his bed and moved forward, just to see if he had any control over what he was seeing, but turning his head or moving himself didn’t seem to make a difference.
She hadn't heard the greeting, but reached out to see if she could see her own hand in front of her. She couldn't, but she could still feel around her bedroom. It was like she was looking at this room through someone else's eyes. But that wasn't possible, was it? This had to just be some kind of... recording. Somehow. In a mask. Brynn inhaled sharply when there was movement, like someone was carrying around the mask itself in the other room. She was getting closer toward the desk and Brynn wondered if she would be able to see anything that had a name or photo. She was standing in the middle of her own room, holding the mask to her face and breathing hard. Moving again to see if it would affect her vision, Brynn walked cautiously toward her desk. This was so weird! "Hello?" Brynn didn't think anyone would answer. This had to be some kind of projection. But it was still... bizarre. It looked so real to her.
Liam moved across his room, but that didn’t seem to affect what he was seeing. He stopped when he ran into his desk chair, barely catching himself, then deciding to take a seat, since moving wasn’t doing him any good. Just about then, the world inside the mask started to shift, moving across the girl’s room as he stayed in his chair. It made him wonder if there was a delayed response, like the two were connected across a slow connection, and so he began to look around, hoping that would happen on the other end as well. The closer he got to the desk, the easier it was to make out some of the pictures, some of the faces familiar. It was becoming clear that this was someone else in Point Pleasant, at least when he saw a picture of some of the cheerleaders, and it made him think back to when he bought the mask. The shopkeeper had said something about finding it’s twin. Had he known this would happen? What kind of magic was this? Because it was definitely magic.
Whatever, or whoever, was on the other side of the mask was moving. Brynn held her breath, wincing slightly when whoever it was seem to run into something. Then it lowered and was still again. Licking her lips, she looked at everything within view to try and see if there was a familiar face on any of the photos, or a name on the medals hanging nearby. Were they for track? Brynn felt herself walking forward, as if that would help some, even though it didn't. She had to forcibly stop herself before she ran straight into her desk. She found herself incredibly, almost painfully, curious now as to what she was looking at, or rather, whose room she was 'in'. If someone was on the other side, could they see her? Could they see her room? Should she be worried about them seeing her photos, or her belongings? Brynn had the urge to take the mask off and leave it somewhere hidden, but she couldn't quite bring herself to do it yet. She was experiencing far too much adrenaline to even move, in all honesty.
As Brynn moved closer to her desk, Liam leaned in, as if that would help bring him closer. He even reached out, but found himself touching his own desk, rather than the one he was seeing through the mask. Now that he was closer, he was sure those were Point Pleasant Varsity Cheerleaders. He recognized Victoria and Brynn Chapman, Jules Cooper, and Mara Jenkins, all gathered together, posing during a football game. Was the room he was looking at one of theirs? Liam bit his lip and wondered what they might think if they knew what he was seeing… unless they were seeing his room right now, too. His heart beat faster at that thought, not sure what to do about it, but he found he didn’t want to take the mask off, even with the invasion of privacy.
It took Brynn a few seconds to realize that someone had to be on the other side of the mask. They were near photographs just as she saw. Maybe they could see her pictures and they were trying to show her some of their own? She swallowed and leaned in, as though that would help get closer. It was an instinctive move and she laughed a little at how silly she felt. But she could see a picture of three boys and she recognized them from school. Chase, Evan and Liam. Brynn wasn't exactly friends with any of them, but Liam and Chase were both in a class with her. Did this room belong to one of them? Brynn inhaled deeply and hesitated before she reached out with her finger to point to her own photo. She didn't think taking off the mask and turning it towards her would show the guy, or girl?, her face because instinct told her that they both needed to be wearing the masks at the same time for this to work. Brynn had put it on her face already a few times since buying it and nothing like this had happened. She paused briefly before pointing to her face between Vic's and Jules's. If they could figure out who the other was, maybe they could actually find each other and talk about this bizarre thing happening.
The more the other person leaned in, the easier it was for Liam to make out objects and pictures on the desk. He was in the process of trying to narrow down exactly who it might be wearing the mask when a hand reached out and pointed at one of the pictures. Liam held his breath, silently praying that it not be Victoria because then he would have to take the mask off and never put it on again. But instead the finger pointed to her cousin, Brynn, and Liam relaxed a touch with relief. They shared a class together, but that was it. She was popular, a cheerleader, and it was hard for him to imagine her on the other side of the mask. Then he realized he should probably do something similar in return and Liam reached out, fumbling around his own desk from memory. When he found the picture he was looking for, he hesitated only for a moment, then pointed to himself on the far left, remembering Chase was in the middle, with Evan on the right. If it wasn’t Brynn seeing this then… He just hoped it was. He hoped he hadn’t given himself away to someone or something much more dangerous, but if he had, it was too late now.
Brynn waited as the other person found a photo. She wasn’t entirely sure what she was supposed to do once she found out who was behind the other mask - assuming it was a mask - but she still wanted to know. The finger pointed to Liam Wolfe. Brynn wished he could hear her or they could communicate somehow. Then she huffed a bit, well aware that they could talk at school but would that be weird? Would he seek her out? Should she seek him out? What would they talk about? What was the point of this? Yes she has a lot of questions and no answers. Brynn waited a moment before feeling around for one of her journals. She flipped open one of them and felt around for a pen. Brynn quickly scrawled a note so he could see. find me at school. It was probably messy but she didn’t care. Brynn felt her lips twitch in a faint smile as she lifted her hand and gave him a thumbs up, which was more a question. Okay?
Liam had always loved the weird in the world, but he had no idea what this was. What was the point of it? It wasn’t like they could properly communicate and it was hard to do anything when the mask was on other than watch what the other person was up to, except they were both experiencing the same issue. He watched as she fumbled around for something and as soon as she started to write he began to do the same. Liam grabbed a notepad from inside his desk drawer, then waited to see what she wrote. Find her at school? Sure. But what was he going to say? He had time to think about that, so he scribbled down a response, his handwriting messy since it was like writing with his eyes closed. OK. He might’ve said more if there was an easy way to do it, but he wasn’t sure his writing would be legible. But then it still felt weird to just disappear after what they’d both experienced, so he wrote a bit more. Good night, he added, then took off his mask, finding himself back in his room, staring at the notepad on his desk.
Brynn didn't have a clue what they would say to each other at school, but they had to say something, right? This was too weird to ignore. She wanted to know where he bought his mask, and why he got it. If he bought it at the antique shop, or somewhere else? Maybe they could figure out what the masks did, beyond what they saw tonight. There had to be some purpose, right? She saw the words 'good night' and might have written it back to him but then the connection was broken and Brynn was looking at her own room again. Releasing a breath, she took off the mask and set it down on her desk, staring at it for a good long while. Then she turned to climb into bed, weirdly looking forward to school.
