Who: Hunter & Sebastian
Where: Chambers Road
When: Saturday 11/18 before the dance
Status: Complete
Sebastian told himself it didn’t matter what he wore, it was a casual dance and he didn’t have a date. Not really. Except he did, even if no one knew it but them, and he wanted to look good for Hunter, even if they ended up across the room from each other. He went with a button down shirt, tucked in, with the sleeves rolled up, and dark jeans, topped with a brown leather jacket instead of his letterman for once. He spent far too long on his hair and still wasn’t happy with it by the time he had to leave to pick up Hunter. If it had been a real date, he’d have asked him out to dinner first, but that was a step further than he could take things, at least right now. It was risky enough to show up and leave together, something he was hoping people might not notice, and if they did… maybe by the time anything came of it, he’d be ready.
It was already dark when he pulled up in front of Hunter’s house, but it was still early enough. They wouldn’t be the first to the dance, but that was fine too. He kind of figured they’d roll in, hang out with their friends for a while, then head down to the beach to get the bonfire ready. Make an appearance, but not a statement. He didn’t want to stay long enough that people would really notice that he wasn’t dancing with anyone, not after he’d told at least three girls that he already had a date before changing his story to ‘I already have plans’. Which he did. And neither was technically a lie.
His nerves flared up when he hopped out of the car and hurried up to Hunter’s door to ring the bell, not sure if his father would be home or not tonight. A part of him kind of wanted a second chance at that first impression, but then he’d also really like to move on without it. It would be far less awkward if he didn’t have to deal with a parent tonight, especially if it contradicted the story Hunter had told him to stay out all night.
Hunter was ready and waiting for him, opening the door just seconds after Sebastian knocked. He’d gone through a similarly stressful time trying to decide on an outfit and making peace with his hair. Don’t dress up too much he thought since he didn’t have a date but still nice enough to impress and fit in. It was a juggle. One that had him stressed out and it showed a little when he opened the door.
"Hi!" He exclaimed as he looked Sebastian up and down. It was admittedly a little weird to see him without his letter jacket but he looked damn good. Hunter just hoped Sebastian thought the same about him. At least they didn’t match or anything. Hunter's rust-brown shirt wouldn’t look good with Sebastian's hair color.
Sebastian’s face lit up when Hunter opened the door and, while he couldn’t kiss him hello, he could look all he wanted. Hunter always looked good, but he looked especially good tonight. It made not kissing him even harder. “Hi,” he smiled. “You ready?” he asked. “Got something warm for later?” He knew they’d have to bundle up a little, even with the fire going, and it was a shame they wouldn’t be able to cuddle together. They’d just have to make up for it afterwards, when they finally got a chance to be alone. Sebastian tried his best not to let his mind go there right now, as it would just make it harder to wait it out.
"Yup, got a hoodie," Hunter replied and it should be enough to keep him warm along with his jacket. Of course he would much rather do the real dating thing where Sebastian wore his letter jacket and ended up giving it to Hunter and then holding him close all night. A boy could dream. Maybe one day that'd be reality. "I figured I could leave it in your car until after the dance if we're leaving together, that okay?"
Sebastian assumed Hunter had more than just his hoodie, since he was staying the night, but it wasn’t like he’d need a lot and he nodded, smiling. “Yeah, of course. I thought we’d leave early and go get the bonfire ready. The wood’s already up there and setup, but… it’d give us a few minutes together.” It was a little thing to look forward to, stolen kisses before they had to deal with their peers again. It was a smaller group, but there were still people there that didn’t know about them, some of them the type to talk.
A few minutes was better than nothing, way better, and Hunter smiled at the thought. "Cool," he murmured then stepped back inside the hall to pick up the hoodie he'd draped over his overnight bag. He hoped people wouldn't notice how many rides he was getting with Sebastian tonight, or if they did that they wouldn't think much of it but he was still putting his backpack in the trunk so nobody would see it by accident. "I can just... volunteer to help with the fire since I 'won't have a date' or something."
“Or something,” Sebastian muttered in agreement, aware that it wasn’t a perfect plan. If Greg, Phee, or Jules showed up first, it would be fine, but some of the others would might wonder. “I’ll figure it out,” he said quietly, stepping closer to Hunter to take his bag for him, but also just wanting to be close when he had no reason to be. “People know we talk. Maybe I gave you a ride so Mak and Sabrina could have some alone time.” It was a lie, since Hunter wasn’t riding with them, but anyone who didn’t know better might buy it.
"Sounds good," Hunter replied and while it wasn't a solid plan it was better than nothing. Of course it was more likely that nobody would ask and jump to conclusions instead but that was a risk they were both apparently willing to take tonight. "They'll probably just think you're super brave and maybe a bit of a risk-taker, riding with the gay guy who obviously has a crush on you." He grinned and idly brushed his knuckles against Sebastian's chest, not quite feeling brave enough to risk touching him in an obvious way that someone might see.
“Why would that be risky?” Sebastian asked with a smile. “Should I worry about you jumping me or something?” If he was really brave, he’d just come on out and take Hunter to the dance, but that was more than he was ready to deal with. What he was doing was risky enough, likely stirring up rumors that were too true to ignore, but he kept hoping he could keep it all under the radar until he was ready. It had to be soon. The longer this went on, the more he knew that he couldn’t keep doing this. Even just standing in Hunter’s doorway was hard, his body leaning in to Hunter’s touch, craving what he knew he couldn’t have at the moment.
"You could get gay germs all over you," Hunter said with a little laugh. "And I might jump you, you know. It's hard not to." That wasn't a joke, it was always hard to keep his hands off him. Sebastian wasn't moving away and Hunter looked up at him with a cocked brow. "Are you ready?" he asked, echoing Sebastian's question from a couple of minutes ago. "Or do you wanna skip the dance altogether," he added jokingly, hoping nobody was watching them.
“I wouldn’t mind,” Sebastian said with a little laugh. “Maybe I want you to.” If he’d been out, he’d have been all over that. Hunter jumping him? Yes, please. But reality was that he couldn’t even hold Hunter’s hand without wondering who might see them. Was he ready to show up with Hunter and possibly start up the rumor mill? He wasn’t sure, but he was going to do it anyways. “I’m ready,” he said as he took a deep breath, then smiled. “You just wanna skip and go straight to bed,” he teased. It wasn’t a bad idea.
"You're terrible," Hunter said with a snicker and it was honestly tempting but he did want to go to the dance and meet up with his friends. "C'mon," he murmured, pushing Sebastian's chest playfully. "Get out so we can actually go to the dance." If they stayed in that hallway Hunter wasn't so sure he could resist staying home for a while then arriving at the dance late. Now that would bring attention to them and he wasn't going to risk that, Sebastian's comfort and safety quieting down his more selfish urges.
“Okay, okay,” Sebastian laughed, backing up and then leading the way towards his car. As tempting as it was, Sebastian felt obligated to at least make an appearance, especially since he had plans for the bonfire afterwards. If he didn’t show up, people might think the bonfire was off and he didn’t want to do that to Jules. Plus, people might ask even more questions. “Is Jen going to the dance?” he asked, popping the trunk for Hunter as they got close.
"I'm pretty sure she's not," Hunter replied. His sister wasn't big on these events although she did have friends now so maybe they'd talk her into going. "She might come to the bonfire, she likes fire." He had at least done his brotherly duty and invited her he thought as he tossed his stuff in the back and smiled up at Sebastian. "How do you want to do this when we get there? Should I go in first or?"
“Everyone likes fire,” Sebastian grinned. It had been hard to keep the bonfire on the smaller side, especially since Sebastian liked to include everyone, but he was glad that Hunter had thought to invite Jen. He gave Hunter’s question some thought as he circled around to get in the car, climbing behind the wheel and starting it up before he answered. “If you don’t mind… that’d probably work. I can just wait a minute or two and follow you in.” He knew it sucked, and he hated asking it of Hunter, but they would draw the most attention if they walked in together.
It did suck and Hunter didn't want things to be that way. He wanted to walk in with Sebastian, kiss him in public and show him off but that wasn't how things were. "That works," he replied, trying to sound chipper about it even if he wasn't. He fastened his seatbelt and reached over to brush his fingers against Sebastian's hand. "We can totally talk at the dance, you should come get a drink when I do or something."
That little brush of fingers wasn’t enough for Sebastian and he reached out and caught Hunter’s hand. He wanted to apologize again, to make it all up to Hunter, but he knew the only way to rectify it was to push past his fear. Words just weren’t good enough and for the first time he thought that this was a bad idea for reasons he hadn’t even considered. It was totally selfish of him to want to go like this. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I didn’t… I didn’t really think this through.”
Hunter knew it was going to suck so much more come prom. This was just a casual little dance that was held at school and wasn't that big of a deal so he could live with it. "It's okay," he reassured Sebastian, giving his hand a little squeeze. "You have nothing to be sorry for. I want to go to that dance and I mean, I would have gone stag anyway." It wasn't like boys were lining up to date him so if he hadn't gotten together with Sebastian he'd no doubt still be single and miserable.
“You shouldn’t have to go stag if you have a boyfriend,” Sebastian told him. He knew there weren’t a lot of guy kids in their school, but it was still hard for him to believe that none of them had asked Hunter. Maybe they’d gotten caught up in the whole ‘girls ask boys’ thing, but Hunter was really too hot to have to go to this thing by himself. It just hardened his resolve to be properly out by the next dance so he could do this the right way. “You’ll save me a dance for later?” he asked, biting his lip. Later, they could be alone and they could dance all they wanted.
"I'll save you all the dances you want," Hunter replied, warmth spreading through his body. They'd probably do a lot more than dance when they had the privacy to do so but it still made him feel a little sappy to think about dancing in the dark with his boyfriend. In his mind they'd be able to do it on the beach and while a reality check would tell him that was impossible, he chose to ignore it for now. Dreaming was free, after all.
In the darkness of the car, Sebastian couldn’t just sit there. Not with Hunter squeezing his hand and being so insanely supportive, even when he didn’t think he deserved it. He leaned across and kissed him, quick but solid, and mentally promised them both that he wouldn’t put them through this again. Hunter deserved better. They both did. He touched his forehead to Hunter’s for just a second, then pulled back and put the car in gear. “Let’s go,” he said with a little smile. They needed to at least make an appearance before heading down to the beach.
