Jade & Sabrina
“That’s… well, I mean, that’s not you being an asshole,” Sabrina said. “That’s you being honest. You might have been able to word it better though?” She grinned and nudged him gently. “You know, you don’t have to say yes to people asking you out just to be nice. If you don’t want to go, say no.” She had been rather honest with Mak tonight too, and it hadn’t occurred to her that maybe she had been an asshole. Truth was truth, wasn’t it? And she certainly hadn’t said anything with the intent of being hurtful.
“I think I was an asshole,” Jade said ruefully. “But I don’t know why. I mean, why would I do that? It’s like I got hold of some truth serum.” Sure, maybe it hadn’t been a great idea to say yes to Emily, but what else was he going to do? It hadn’t been like he was going to go with a dude, as much as that would’ve been his inclination. “It’s flattering to be asked. I guess… I dunno.” He shrugged. “Did you have a good time at least?”
“Uh. It was okay?” Sabrina took a sip from the drink in her hand. “Mak and I had fun. But then we started talking about like, after graduation and I don’t think she was very happy with what I said? But it didn’t seem to ruin our night or anything.” Sabrina sighed a bit and looked around for her girlfriend. “I just kind of feel like the world’s worst girlfriend. I’m so not made for these kind of things, I don’t think.”
“It’s a while ‘til graduation,” Jade said. “Was she wondering if you guys’d still be together afterward?” He smiled over at her, the expression rueful. “Too bad there’s not instructions somewhere for being a girlfriend, or a boyfriend.” He had no idea. It would be nice to find out, but he didn’t think he had the courage to open up to anyone else about his sexuality, at least not anytime soon. At least tonight’s little adventure had told him that he probably shouldn’t try to date girls.
"Basically," Sabrina said with a nod. "I mean, I'd like to be, but I just... what are the odds of high school sweethearts staying together that long? Through college and all that. Mak's definitely going to a good college, and I feel... kinda like a loser, tagging along, you know what I mean? She's got the future. I don't." Shrugging, Sabrina sipped more from her drink before nudging Jade gently. "I've got you though! If you stay in town. Is your brother looking to ship you off to school?"
“Long odds,” Jade agreed. Even as someone who’d never had a relationship, it didn’t seem likely. He could understand why people would want to think it could last, though. He thought he’d probably be that type, too. He finished his drink, realizing he was probably throwing it down a little too fast but not caring that much. “You’re not a loser,” he said. “Doesn’t matter where or if you go to college.” He nudged her back. “He was asking me what my plans were a while back. Turns out I have a small college fund. Who knew?” He was still surprised about that one. “I can’t decide if I want to stay around here or try somewhere else.”
