For years the evening and night before Halloween Fin had reserved for Danny, they’d enjoy a meal and spend the night together, although they had stopped dating the two of them were still close and often intimate, it was something that they didn’t tell anyone but Lucy had guessed ages ago and often teased them about it but now Danny was gone, and for the first time since before they had dated the night was spent alone. It didn’t stop Fin from sending a message to Danny’s phone when he awoke that morning, just in case. Happy Birthday Danny. We all miss you. Remember that no matter where you are I will always love you He knew there wouldn’t be a reply and the phone had been turned off or had ran out of batteries long ago.
He went to the store early and did some work, trying to busy himself and stop his mind from turning and thinking of Danny and how much he missed him. Looking at the time and seeing that it would be the lunch break at Chamberlain he picked up his phone and dialled Sadie’s number, this day would be hard for her too.
It was Halloween and students were restless. She couldn't blame them. There was a lot to do in town tonight, and she was sure they were all ready to get out of school and have some fun. Blow off steam. Sadie was looking forward to it too. She had plans to attend Halloween Fest on Main Street with her mom and sister and they were all going to get a drink and celebrate in Danny's honor. She knew Magnus and his friend were still in town, but she hadn't heard anything new since their coffee meet up. Sadie supposed she didn't really expect anything to happen there, but she was still clinging to a tiny, thin thread of hope.
Sadie had just sat down in the teacher's lounge to eat her lunch when her phone began to read. She picked it up as soon as she saw Fin's name and Sadie answered as she pulled the plastic film from the frozen meal she had just microwaved. "Hey there," she greeted, her tone bright despite how she was feeling inside. "Everything okay?"
Fin wasn't planning on going to Halloween Fest, instead he had agreed to go to the party at Dragonfly that evening, Danny wouldn't want him sitting around moping and hopefully the night would help take his mind off things, if only for a few hours. He couldn't wait to see the looks on people's faces when Doctor Frank n Furter made his entrance.
A small smile crept over his lips as Sadie answered, he should've called her weeks ago. “Yeah, things are okay, it’s just a tough day.” He sighed softly. “God I miss him Sadie.” He knew that he wasn't the only one, Sadie and her family would be feeling the same way, if not more, they were family and he was just the ex-boyfriend.
Sadie's tone softened a bit. "I know. I do too. I keep expecting to hear from him today." Deep down she knew that wasn't going to happen. Probably ever again. But that felt too pessimistic to entertain at the moment, because she was at school and she didn't want to get maudlin on the phone. "I don't know if he got into contact with you yet, but there's a man here in Point Pleasant, looking into Danny's disappearance. I guess they were friends online, and he came from Chicago." She had given Magnus Fin's name and number, but Sadie had no idea if Magnus had reached out to him yet.
“When my phone chimes I keep thinking maybe it's a text from him.” Though deep down he knew it was as likely as Fin winning the lottery, wherever Danny was, replying to text messages wasn't high on the list. Taking a deep breath he composed himself, Sadie didn't need to hear him blubbering like a baby. “Yeah, he dropped in and asked some questions. They didn't get too personal, thank goodness, even if they were online friends I don't think the details of Danny's romances and sex life, or lack thereof, is anyone else's business.” As far as Fin knew he was still the only person that Danny had slept with and it had nothing to do with the disappearance. “He's out there, somewhere, I know he is.” He had to keep positive, until he was told that Danny had entered the spirit world Fin would always have hope.
"I wouldn't think so," Sadie said. Magnus hadn't asked her any of those kinds of questions, and she didn't think Danny's love life had anything to do with his disappearance. Then again, significant others were generally to blame for a loved one going missing or worse. But as far as Sadie knew, Danny hadn't been seeing anyone. "But, I hope that he is out there. Even if he left for... whatever reason, I just want to know that he's okay. The not knowing is the worse part, I think. But we just have to maintain some optimism and hope for the best until someone can give us a reason not to. I know it's difficult, but just... try to live your life as normally as possible. Even if... Danny would want us to be happy, you know?"
“I still feel bad for not realizing anything was wrong til Lucy called, I'm used to not hearing from him for days, sometimes a week or so, only for him to show up at my place or start blowing my phone up the next. I just thought he was busy with work and the station.” Fin let out a soft sigh, Sadie was right, be optimistic and continue living life as normal as possible. “He would, I can picture him standing there with his arms crossed trying to look stern and telling us to stop moping about and go out and have some fun, or he'd give us ‘that’ look.” He was sure that Sadie had seen the look he was referring to - the big eyed, kicked puppy look that always melted Fin's heart and resolve. Fin also realized he hadn't told Sadie the biggest bit of news in his life currently. “Oh, I got that cottage on Oak Street. Hoping to be in by Thanksgiving.” He didn't want to think that it was only about three weeks away now.
"Even if you had realized something was wrong, that doesn't mean anything would have changed," Sadie pointed out. "It's not healthy to blame yourself for any part of it, so please don't." That was easier said than done, but she hoped he took it to heart. The change of subject was nice and Sadie smiled as she picked up her fork to push around some of her food. "That's wonderful. I can't wait to see it," she said. "We'll have to throw a big house warming party, right? It's going to look great by the time you're done with it."
Fin knew he wasn’t the one to blame for Danny’s disappearance, and even if he had seen some sort of warning sign it didn’t mean he could have done anything to stop it from happening, while he tried his best not to think about the ‘what if’s’, sometimes they invaded his mind anyway and refuse to let go. The mention of a big house warming party made Fin chuckle, “I don’t know about big but I’ll have a housewarming gathering, even if it’s only half a dozen of us over for dinner and I haven’t finished painting all the walls yet.” It all depended on how long Brad took to do the drywall and everything associated with that task. “If it was summer or early fall I’d say a big barbeque in the backyard but I think the time has well and truly passed for that. And I still owe you that dinner.” Sadie knew that he’d deliver on that promise, it was just a matter of ‘when’. “But I should let you get back to your lunch, lunch breaks aren’t nearly as long as we’d like them to be.”
"That sounds wonderful," Sadie said. She was eager to see what Fin did with the house. She and Jared had put a lot of time and effort into fixing up their home, now Sadie's, and she knew Fin would definitely make that cottage his own once he was finished with it. "Give me a call whenever you've got time for dinner and I'll make myself available. And don't hesitate to call me if you need anything, okay? Sometimes it's just nice to hear a friendly voice."
Even though the walls wouldn't be finished for a while, Fin had already gone to the hardware store and picked up some color cards to sort out the color scheme for the cottage, one good thing about owning a place, not getting stuck with the same boring paint as everyone else. “When I get a night off I'll let you know, this time of year calls for warming stews and soups.” Sadie's comment about calling her if he needed anything made him smile. “That offer goes both ways, I'm here if you need me. And thanks Sadie.”
