"But we don't know that," Sera said. She was as close to behind the counter as she could get without actually being behind it, and the notion of ducking back there and hiding was definitely an appealing one. "What if it can get in?" Could it break through the door or the big glass windows? Right then, she wanted her brother, but if she called him, he'd come rushing down here, and if that thing was still lurking around.... Yeah. Not a good idea.
She was horrified by the clerk telling her he was going to his car, but she sealed her lips shut. He didn't know her, she didn't know him, and she doubted she could change his mind about going for his gun. Without another word she crept closer, slinging her purse over her shoulder so she'd have both hands free to lock the door as fast as humanly possible.
"Be careful," she managed to say through frozen lips.
