"Not really," Jade said, squirming a little when she asked him if he knew about the place. He had no idea who'd lived here once upon a time, because he'd never paid attention to that kind of thing. After pondering his next words, he added, "Some of us used to come up here, when it was kind of a ruin? Just to poke around in the old barn." It was hard to explain the charm a falling-down place had for teenagers, and he didn't try. Exploring was just what they did.
Hopefully she didn't think he was too weird after hearing that.
"I'm Jade," he said when she told him her name. He gave her a quick smile and then focused on the horse that was looking at him, noticing the intelligence in its eyes. Animals were great; most of the time he liked them more than people.
