"Kind of figured that part," Jaime admitted. And once again she had some brief concerns about his presence here, but ... people only worried about little kids with strangers, right? It wasn't like she had anything nefarious in mind but ... people thought weird shit all the time.
"Their call," she said with a shrug. "Usually, yeah, but there've been nights we found them crashed outside. My dad didn't believe in keeping them penned in a stall all day, or forcing them to stay outside, so they had ... um. The barn lines up with the paddock so they can go in and out whenever they want." She smiled faintly. "I'm not ... real worried about night time wildlife or anything. Reggie's pretty protective; we found a dead coyote once near the barn and we're pretty sure he beat it nearly to death before it crawled off to die." Maybe if this place had a big wolf pack or something, that for whatever reason decided to descend on the barn, that might be a different story. Or cougars. Did they have cougars up here? "You guys don't have like, wildcats right? Cougars or whatever?" She was pretty sure this place was square in their range but she thought she'd looked once and found it was a lower risk here. Which didn't mean there wasn't one in the area though, and in that case she might try to encourage night time barning until she'd determined whether or not it was likely.
"I was thinking about getting a couple dogs," she admitted. "I was thinking Dobermans but maybe I'll lean toward Rotties," she reflected. "Or Danes, but I don't know that they're that great at being guard dogs." They were big, sure, and would probably give most things pause, but would they attack a threat? Well, she'd research it, she guessed. There was an awful lot to this living alone thing. Maybe she'd just ... find a guy good with guns and invite him to hang out. That might be the easier path.
