It was coming up on eleven forty in the evening when Bill Haskins turned onto Witcham Road that would lead him into Point Pleasant. It was a two lane road, lined by dark trees and deep ditches. He had never been a fan of Witcham. There were no street lamps and reckless drivers liked to push the speed limit as the police presence on this road was practically non-existent. Sometimes on these long drives to and from various high schools, Bill could swear he saw things move in the woods he passed by. Animals, certainly... deers. Maybe a coyote or two. But there would be nights he swore he saw red eyes, or sharp white teeth, and they would be gone in a flash, even when he angled his head back to get a better look. It was always driving back into Point Pleasant, never when he was driving away. But, he realized the simplest explanation was the town's history and gossip that got under his skin and made him see things that were very unlikely to actually be there. Even so, he and Mary were still talking about moving. Bangor was a lovely place, and more importantly, devoid of the bloody history that marred Point Pleasant. Just another year or so and Bill could retire from busing these kids around, sell his house and he and Mary could buy one of those fancy condos somewhere far away from this place.
Bill was caught up in his daydreams about retirement that he didn't realize the trailer tractor driving towards the buses had veered left of center until it was too late. By the time the headlights blinded him and he jerked the wheel to the right to try and avoid a collision, the front of the truck had hit the bus. Metal and glass crunched and shattered and Bill heard the startled cries and screams of the kids in the back before the bus nosedived into the narrow ditch, thrusting Bill forward over the steering wheel where he smacked his head against the cracked windshield and fell into darkness.
