"So how was your summer?" Chelsea asked Emmeline as they walked out on the grounds. She actually had an ulterior motive for talking to Emmeline today, but she knew this had to be entered into delicately, or the blonde could explode on her. This was something Chelsea's twin brother had obviously never learned, which was the reason for the problem in the first place. Emmeline Black hated Cedric Weasley.
Though Chelsea wasn't so sure that was the case. She supported Emmeline when it came to expressing her dislike for the boy, but she always thought there was more to it. This was proven, in Chelsea's opinion, by Emmeline's acceptance of Cedric's public ball invitation.
And the fact that Emmeline didn't slap Cedric after he kissed her. Oh yes, Chelsea knew about the kiss. That was the reason for this talk today, to try to get Emmeline to confess to her feelings once and for all.
"It was, you know... break," Emmeline said with a shrug. "It had it's good parts and bad parts." Mostly bad, she thought silently, not wanting to tell Chelsea about Bella's constant taunting about Cedric. The redhead might actually agree with Emmeline's sister and that just wouldn't do. "I mean, I love my family, but you get sick of them after a while. It was good to have a break from school and head girl duties though."
Chelsea nodded in response. She had hoped that Emmeline would mention her birthday, which the redhead knew for a fact her brother went to. "I know what you mean, even without the head girl duties, seventh year is hard." She shuddered as though expressing to Emmeline how much she would hate to have the extra responsibility added. All the while, she thought about ways to turn the subject to Cedric. Emmeline wasn't going to make this easy for her, that much was obvious.
As they walked through the courtyard, Chelsea noticed two boys sitting on a nearby bench. One was the infamous Trystan Warrington, sex addict. The other was her brother's best friend, who she might have a little crush on. It didn't matter, though. He never gave her a second look.
Emmeline noticed that Chelsea's attention was suddenly detracted. Her eyes moved to follow Chelsea's and rolled her eyes. "Please tell me you don't want to be Warrington's next victim," she said jokingly. Yes, he was good looking, but the way he used his looks made him much less attractive, in her opinion.
"Oh Merlin, no," Chelsea replied turning her head back to look at Emmeline. She bit down on her lower lip gently as her eyes moved toward the boys again. "Actually, I think Jaxon is kinda cute," she said softly, hoping no one but Emmeline could hear.
"So tell him," Emmeline said simply. She knew Jaxon and she knew how shy he was when it came to girls. How he hung around Trystan was completely beyond Emmeline. They had absolutely nothing in common, except possibly an interest in girls. Jaxon, at least, had respect for him. He did like to talk big, but when it came to actually talking to a person of interest, he'd back down. If anyone was going to make a move, it'd have to be Chelsea.
"No, no," she said speeding her pace to keep from looking at Jaxon again. "What about you? Anyone you have your eye on?" she asked, quickly changing the subject. What Emmeline didn't know was that this accidental conversation had fallen right into Chelsea's trap.
Emmeline shook her head. "No, not really," she said with a shrug. "Since Solan, there's really been no one to catch my interest." It wasn't as though she was still hung up on Solan. He was her best friend, but he was the sort of guy she liked. The ones that didn't backtalk or piss a girl off.
Chelsea tilted her head slightly, deciding it was now or never. If she didn't bring up Cedric, it would never come up. "Oh that's a shame," she said softly, "well, depending on who you are of course. It's good for my brother."
Emmeline's head turned sharply in Chelsea's direction. What had she just said? "I would never date your brother," she stated simply. "I'd never be that desperate."
Chelsea took a breath, deciding that she'd have to suck it up and press forward. "Oh really?" she asked disbelievingly. "You don't call the ball a date? Especially when it ended with a kiss?"
Emmeline paled. Chelsea knew about the kiss? Who else had that bastard told? Emmeline hadn't told anyone, nor did she intend to tell anyone. The most she'd told Solan was that she was confused. He was also the only person she'd dared to tell, knowing no one else would find out. The kiss, though... she hadn't expected anyone to know about that. "I um, I only agreed to the ball because it made sense for the people throwing it to go together, and the kiss well, that was all him." Her words came out quickly as she made up the excuse. It sounded good in her head, anyway.
Chelsea had hit a nerve. She couldn't help but be proud of herself for this. She didn't smile, though. She didn't want her friend to know she was enjoying this. "I don't know, it seems like there's more than you're telling me," Chelsea said. "Come on, we grew up telling each other these things. I was your maid of honor at your wedding to my cousin!"
Emmeline laughed in spite of everything when Chelsea mentioned her 'wedding.' When she and James Potter had been younger, they played out a wedding. Chelsea had been her maid of honor and aluminum rings had been exchanged. As cheesy as it was, she still had her ring. A reminder of her carefree childhood. "Well..." Emmeline said biting her lip gently. "Chels, I just... I don't know. Cedric has always been an annoyance to me, and he still is. But things have been... different. I'm not sure I really understand it."
Chelsea tilted her head, listening as they neared the lake. "Different how?" she pressed. She was finally getting Emmeline to talk and she'd be damned if she didn't get the information out.
Emmeline sighed softly. "When Luken told me he saw Cedric snogging Veronica and that it looked like it was leading to more, I got... mad. More than I should have been."
Jealousy. Check, Chelsea took note in her head as she listened to the story.
"Bells and Cedric both called me jealous, but I don't really think I was. When the ball drew nearer, though, I sort of found myself thinking about the idea of going with him. When he kissed me, it felt-" she paused and stopped dead in her tracks. "Omigod, Chelsea," she said finally, turning to her best friend. "I'm in love with your brother."
