It wasn't long for the examiner to call out Emmeline's name. That was a good and bad part about being a Black. She was near the front of the alphabet, so she could get this over with, but it also meant less preparation time. It wasn't as though her mind was really focused on preparation, though. As stressed as she was lately, it had very little to do with exams. Yes, they were always on her mind and the stress was definitely there, but it was the boys that her mind liked to focus on. It was Cedric's distant attitude toward her after the breakup. Yes, she knew he was hurt. She was hurting too. Breaking up with someone she loved wasn't easy and his reaction to it made it even harder. It was also Gabe, who would likely hate to know that he was a distraction. She couldn't get her mind off him and the way he treated her. The things he said to her. They made her feel completely different.
"Emmeline Black?" the name was called a second time. She snapped out of her thoughts and pushed herself up from the table, going toward the chamber that the practical exams were in. She'd been there for various other exams, but this one should be one of the easiest. This one should be the one that she could excel in better than the others. This was one of her best subjects. Yet her mind wasn't on defense. It was on Cedric and Gabe. Gabe and Cedric.
With every prompt she was asked to do, Emmeline felt herself panic inwardly just a little more. She second guessed every spell she cast and hesitated possibly just a little longer than she should have. She had to actually think about what she was doing. When she was an auror, on the field, she wouldn't have time for all the second guessing. She wasn't handling the pressure at all well and she didn't know what to do anymore.
On the last prompt, she was sure she'd forgotten what she was to do entirely. Her mind went completely blank and she wasn't even sure she'd heard correctly. "Excuse me?" she asked the examiner, who kindly repeated the prompt. Her eyes closed and she cast the first charm that cam to mind, not really knowing if she was even right or not. "I'm not going to make it to auror training." She wasn't sure if she thought it or if she said it out loud. everything started spinning, then everything went black.
