Dalton had plans to split right after the concert. He wouldn't have been there at all considering the day. It was one of three days every year that hit Dalton hard. Valentine's Day. It was one of those days he would go all out for Brittany, which brought the memories closer on that day. The other days he hated were her birthday and the anniversary of her death. Did the boys listen when he said that this was a bad day for him, though? Of course not.
During the concert, he was okay. He was playing music and that was his true passion. He could let himself get lost in the music where no one existed, including the cutesy couples in the audience, his cousin's fiancèe waiting in the wings or the bouncy girl in the front row with eyes for Alan. When he was playing the music all that existed was the music. It was a nice change from the rest of the world he lived in.
Throughout the concert, he was entirely in his own world and completely at peace. He could breathe without it hurting. In his world, Brittany was still there, sitting and listening to him play. In his world, he still got to spend time with his girl. In his world she never died.
He couldn't always have his world, though. This became evident when the music stopped and all the pain kept rushing back. As soon as the curtains closed, his cousin's fiancè ran on stage. He knew that by the time he got to the stage door, the bouncy girl in the front row would be waiting for Alan. He knew that Brittany wouldn't be joining him now that the music had ended.
He gathered his things and slowly made his way out of the stage door, fully prepared to leave.
