Who: Matthew and Evelyn
What: Talking
When: After being arrested
Where: Their apartment
Warning: None
Matthew was not having the best of nights. He’d gone out on his own and had done fairly well until one incident had him arrested and suspected as the Ripper. He had been very close to being tossed in jail until Thomas, a man from the Night Watch came in to save the day. He’d gotten him free and had made sure he’d made it home safely.
He was now standing outside of the building that housed the room he shared with Evelyn. He suspected she was worried and would be pretty upset when she found out what had happened, which left him not really wanting to go inside. But he had to. Thomas was waiting, not leaving until he stepped inside and after giving one final wave he put one foot in front of the other and made his way inside and to the room.
Hope would be that Evelyn hadn’t made it home yet, that she hadn’t known he’d left on his own but the moment he made it to their door he knew she was home. Slowly he turned the knob and pushed the door open.
“Evelyn,” he called softly as he stepped inside and shut the door.
In fact she had made it home, only to realize that there was no one inside. Matthew was gone. She was mostly sure that if he had been killed, she would have sensed it. That didn’t mean nothing bad had happened. First she had knocked on several of the doors, asking questions of their neighbors but no one knew anything. Someone just said he left, and that was it. She’d gone out by herself then, asking around if anyone had seen him but no one had.
When the search was proving useless, Evelyn had come home and decided to wait. She would give him some hours, and if he was not home in time for daylight, well then she would begin to panic. She’d been pacing for quite some time, gazing out the window when she saw a cab pull up in front of the apartment building and finally Matthew got out and came up to their room.
She turned and let out a sigh. At least he wasn’t dead. “My god, where on Earth were you? I thought something dreadful had happened.”
So far there was no yelling, Matthew was surprised at that and he relaxed just a little. “I’ve had a rather crazy night,” he explained as he took off his hat and set it aside before taking off his coat. “I decided to go for a walk. I was sure I could do it alone, I had to or I was going to go psychotic in this room,” he hung his coat and then moved to a chair to warily sit down. “I walked clear out to the docs and ran into a bit of trouble,” he looked at her. “But I’m fine, I promise. All in one piece,” he said and ran a hand through his hair. He didn’t mention the woman or what had nearly happened or what had actually happened. He wouldn’t unless she started asking questions.
Evelyn opened her mouth to say something, but shut it again and realized that she had to hear him out. She might not have liked the fact that he had gone for a walk, but she understood. It was maddening to just sit here and wait for someone else before you could go out and live your own life. And the fact that he had gotten into some kind of trouble was a bit alarming, but she didn’t want to jump to anyone conclusions and start accusing him of things. So she waited for him to be done with his story, before looking him over.
“What kind of trouble?”
“There was a woman on the docks,” he started. “A prostitute. She came up to me, got into my space, trying to get me to warm her up for the night,” he glanced up at Evelyn. It was a little embarrassing for Matthew to say it was a prostitute that had him coming undone. “I don’t know, she wouldn’t leave after I declined and something else took over,” he shook his head. “The bloodlust took over. My fangs came out and she started to scream about me being the bloody Ripper,” he groaned. “I hypnotized her, or whatever it is, and took her into an alley, fully prepared to bite her when I was grabbed from behind. A constable and a dock worker I think. She pointed me as the Ripper and I was arrested,” he continued explaining. “I was questioned by the constable and he was ready to book me as the Ripper, too, I think, because I couldn’t fully answer all his questions. Then someone from the Night Watch came in and saved me,” he looked up at her again. I’m Sorry, Evelyn, I didn’t mean for this to happen…”
She didn’t know whether to be relieved that he hadn’t killed anyone, or completely angry that he had gone out and almost got himself thrown in jail. The thing was that she couldn’t really be angry with him. Evelyn had done much worse things, much much worse. And she had mostly been shown compassion from the vampire that had taught her. She rubbed her face, trying to think of what to say, or how to react. “Oh Matthew,” was all she said at first. “I’m glad that you’re not in jail. The bloody Ripper? Good grief. I know you didn’t mean for it to happen. Someone from Night Watch came in and saved you? Really? I thought they wanted to toss our kind away and looking for any chance they could to stake you or send you up the river.”
“You and me both,” Matthew chuckled. He leaned forward and grasped her hands in his and pulled her until she came to sit on his lap. “Other than dying and then undying, being arrested and being what I am and being pegged as the Ripper was pretty frightening,” he shook his head. “But yes, a man named Thomas from Night Watch, he wore a funny little half mask to cover part of his face, came in and got me released. He even accompanied me home to make sure I didn’t go off the rails again,” he managed a smile.
Taking a hold of his hand, she gave them a squeeze. “I know, it’s a lot. I can’t blame you for going out. You must feel completely frustrated, being stuck in here all the time.” That was putting it mildly. He had to be going a little crazy. “I think being out in Whitechapel is probably not a good idea, even if you weren’t going through this. I..” she wasn’t sure what he was planning on doing with that prostitute, she hoped he was just going to drink her blood but.. “All I can think of is that he knew that you weren’t the Ripper, because you were a vampire but couldn’t say anything. I wonder if they’re going to be looking for you.” That wouldn’t do either. “Do you need blood?”
Evelyn was probably right. Being out in Whitechapel was probably not a great idea. “Probably not, but I’d like to know the city I’m living in now,” he sighed. “If this place is to be my home, I’d like to get to know it. I’m tired of living like this, too, being locked up like I’m some rabid animal and just...living like this,” he spread his hand around the room. “We can live better than this.” The question of if he needed blood had him nodding his head automatically before he knew he was even doing it. “Yes. I’m not crazy in blood lust but it’s there.”
“I know, I know..” she gave a little sigh. “I want you to know the city. I’m sorry.” She couldn’t help but feel guilty, since she was the one who got him into this mess. “We will live better than this, we just need some time.” Evelyn knew that he was still thinking like a human, because humans were very short term. This had to be very frustrating for him, she knew. “Okay, we will get you blood. And then I will find that woman and I’ll make sure to erase her memories if I can. But I need you to point her out.. At a safe distance.”
Matthew wound his arms around Evelyn and nuzzled his face against the crook of her neck. “I’m still adjusting,” he murmured. “I’ll get there. I promise.” At the mention of blood and finding the woman, he gave a nod but didn’t move. “Just sit here like this for a moment,” he said. “Then we’ll go.”
