Dearest Una,
I was pleased the most for to obtain your kind card on Monday past. I hope that you shall be forgiveing of my spellings, and kindly overlook whatever unintentional offense I may cause due to my lack of the understanding. Your query was most kind, it has been, indeed, of interest to me in order to follow the resent events of my neighborhood. I shall impart what I do now, however, there is much I do not.
On September the 30 of this year, I was indeed woken quite suddenly early in the morning, before dawn, as was my Auntie, who is also a Bakst witch. It was an awesome energy in the airs, a smell of the death, a feel of the bugs on the skin, of the hairs prickleing on the arms, a sense of great wrong. I had not felt such during the previous killings.
I went to my friend, Miss Ward, who is also a witch, and she also felt a feeling of wronging, only hers was a feeling of distance, of not belonging, and she was out of sorts. I notised that the feeling I had did decrease as I walked away from my place of residens, so, upon discussion, we walked along the perimetre to track where I could sense a change in the airs. This change was roughly along the Lemon Street and Cable Street, and later, when we drew it onto a map, it appeared for to be centred about the location of the murders that had occured that morning.
I have cast spells at the site in order for to see what I might determin. It is not a signature I have encountered before, and it is not of the magics I am used to. It felt old, and powerful, and sharp, as a knife, cuting through the airs. Even several days after this event, it was still sharp.
I am not certain what I may do next. I have communicated with several witches, and have met Detective Inspector Walker, who is part of a banshie, and Mr Eden, who is of the Night Watch.
Sincerely,
Zipporah bat Esther Bakst

My dearest Zipporah,
I wish I were surprised to hear that you also experienced the rite conducted on the 30 September. I think it must have touched all of us who can feel power.
One of my fellows of the Courts and I visited a place where the veils between realms are thin. The veil between this world and the realm of the dead is thinner than usual for this time of the year--which, it being almost Samhain, is very thin--and the veil between here and the Courts is thicker than usual. One such as myself could still easily pass it, but smaller friends might be bound on this side, and that would be ill fortune for them. I must gather them in to protect them.
I would like very much to go with you some day, or night, soon to the place where you think the rite took place. This bodes ill for all of us who deal in magic. Watch yourself and Miss Ward, for I fear the practitioners we oppose here would love a young witch such as either of you to use in their rites.
Mr Walker is known to me through his family connections but I do not know Mr Eden yet. I should be very careful in speaking of this with those you do not know well. With the witches, I trust your discretion, for your judgement is sound. For others who inquire, discretion may be the better part of valour.
On a happier note, when next we have tea, I have a friend I would like to introduce to you. I think you and she will have interests in common and would find much amity in each other's company. I hope also you will bring your friend Miss Ward, as I should enjoy making myself known to any friend of yours.
Yours most affectionate,
Una Nicnevin

Dearest Una,
I would very much enjoy haveing tea, and introduceing Miss Ward to you, and to meet your friend as well. I did so like our last tea quite much, and the sandwiches were quite good. I tried for to make a version of one with the cucumber and water kres for my Auntie, and she found it most satisfactory.
Mr Eden seems to be a trustworthy sort, even though he is of the law. He can see and talk to the spirits, and seems for to have an affinity with them. I am glad to hear you know of Mr Walker, as I have only met him the once.
Is the time of year important, do you think? Might the thining of the veil play a part? The airs smelling of death and the wanderings of spirits on the 30th would tell me so.
I am wondering of the traped small friends you have. I am sorry for to hear they are faceing difficulties. Are they all safe and accounted for? Might there being traped also play a part? I am familiar with the spirits gaining strength this time of the year, but am not as familiar with the habits of your veil, and I plead my ignorans. It seems as though they wax and wayne in opposition. Is that true? Does one’s being harmed in some way impact the other?
I have been careful in decideing for whom to speak on these matters, and should I have unasked for questions from unfamiliar circles, I shall be cautious, and shall also let you know whom has asked.
I should also be glad for to take you there, to the place myself. Night is best.
Sincerely,
Zipporah bat Esther Bakst

My Dearest Zipporah,
I fear you are right and the timing, coming so close to Samhain, is no coincidence. The power of death is strong now, and will be rising until the thirty-first. If there is some ritual to bind the dead, or use the power of death, or some other fell necromancy, this would be the time of year to perform it, at least as my people understand the rites.
I do not know that my little friends are all accounted for, but I have put out the call that I will keep them safe, and that they are welcome in my demesnes. Beings such as I, and my Summer counterparts, can still pass, and we are the ones whose powers wax and wane according to the time of year. If it is a strike of that sort, it is against my Queen, because it is her season and her power will not be at its fullest until Yule. I do not think this is the case yet, for several reasons, not least of which is I have spoken to her representative here and he does not think so.
We should go before Samhain if we can. Had I known better, I would have chosen a different night for the wedding but I did not.
After the wedding and a short wedding trip, we shall all have tea together and you and I will speak on this in person.
Yours most affectionate,
Una Nicnevin
