She hadn't shouted it at the top of her lungs or pitched it so others could hear. A normal speaking voice was drowned out by the music for anyone but her dancing partner anyway. Leah thought Bertie was going to have a stroke right there on the dance floor. If she'd ever been tempted to take him as a lover even if he hadn't already been snatched up by her father that would be a mark against him. The young man needed to acquire a thicker skin and not show his anxiety or shock at the drop of a hat.
Then he had the audacity to make that absurd offer and bow for Christ's sake! She wanted the dance floor to open and swallow her whole, but unlike Bertie she maintained her composure.
"Thank you very much for your kind offer Mister Eden, but I don't believe that will be necessary." The only hint of her displeasure was the set of her jaw and the fire in her eyes.
