"No, no," Bertie said quickly, smiling and shaking off all thoughts of abstract troubles. "You have quite enough to think on--I beg you, my lord, don't spend a moment on me. I am quite well, and shall remain vigilant in your service."
Lord Black didn't look convinced, but before he could think of what else to say, a tall, angular gentleman that Bertie recognized as an MP for the House of Shadows loomed near, obviously waiting to angle into the conversation. He would not be there for Bertie.
"Your pardon, my lord, I'm keeping you from other guests, most certainly my betters. Thank you, for your concern," and that was heartfelt, with a sweet, happy, fleeting smile to accompany it. "You do me a great honour. Good evening, Lord Black."
Bowing and taking a step back, Bertie subtly tilted his head once more before turning and slipping off into the crowd.
