It was petty to rib Lucien when he was clearly trying so hard to comport himself well, but Cassius took too much pleasure out of their little skirmishes not to rise to the bait dangled before him.
"You certainly deserve a turn in luck," Cassius said gravely, every inch the sympathetic nobleman. "Heaven knows yours has not been kind, of late. I certainly hope they find the villain who came after you. No news there, yet, I hear?"
The song was screeching to a close on the strings of pained violins; Cassius released Lucien and bowed before Lucien could form a rejoinder. "A pleasure as always, Lucien. If you'll excuse me, I do believe I shall pay my respects to your lady wife."
