“You’re a coward,” Harry snarled at Severus’ retreating back, shaking with anger and repressed tears biting at his eyes. Severus froze instantly, then turned slowly on his heel to face Harry, his eyes smoldering.
“Excuse me?” he said in a deadly whisper, and Harry forced back hysterical laughter. Those were the words that would have made Severus stay, all this time?
“I said you’re a coward,” he repeated harshly, fighting to keep the sadness out of his tone and focus on the anger—Severus had yet to respond to Harry’s unhappiness, but he was staying to hear out Harry’s rage. “Every time things get tough with us, you run! You walk away, you shut me out, you refuse to talk about it. You’re fine when things are going well but the instant we hit a snag you’re out.” Harry’s voice broke over his next words, and he had to turn away from Severus’ startled, accusing eyes to try again.
“I love you, Severus,” he said softly, “but I can’t do this if you’re not in it with me. You don’t get to walk out on me anymore.” He pushed past Severus, eyes still averted, and grabbed his cloak from its place on the wall. He fumbled with the fastenings, fighting back hurt that Severus could just stand there, lifeless—could just let him go. “I’ll be at Ron’s tonight,” he said at last, wrapping his arms around himself for strength. “Think about whether you’re willing to fight for this and let me know in the morning.”
Severus said nothing, and Harry fought back the urge to turn around and fall into his arms and beg forgiveness. He deserved better than this, he told himself forcefully as he turned the knob and pulled the door open. He deserved a partner who would talk through their fights and resolve them—who would listen to his thoughts and feelings and try to understand. He deserved better than a man who quit on him when things didn’t go his way. He loved Severus, desperately wanted Severus to be that man—but he couldn’t spend the rest of his life hoping he would change if he wasn’t.
He took one step outside the threshold and then stopped, needing it not to end like this. “I love you, Severus,” he pleaded softly. He waited a moment, but Severus didn’t answer.
Harry closed the door.
