Prompt 3: Severus was going to get his Valentine ... one way or another.
Looking around, Severus adjusted his mask and sighed. Shocking even himself, he had agreed to attend Lucius’ annual Valentine’s Day soiree. Narcissa always invited him and while she had been particularly persistent this year, he usually had no difficulty avoiding it.
This year was different, however. The war was over, and he had ended up with things he never thought he would: his life to do with as he wished, his freedom, a stipend from the Ministry as a reward for all his work throughout the war, and even some measure of respect from the majority of wizards. And yet, he wanted more. Perhaps it was asking too much, but Severus was willing to take the risk. His goal was worth it.
He felt it the moment Potter entered the room. Severus’ eyes narrowed. Potter had been instrumental in getting him pardoned, of course. Without his testimony Severus would probably be in Azkaban or dead, not the relatively successful owner of an exclusive potion shop that he was.
Potter looked good, his formal robes suiting his muscled frame. He was accompanied by his ubiquitous companions, Granger and Weasley, although, happily, the Weasley girl was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps the article Severus had read in the Prophet earlier that week, detailing their breakup, had been correct for once.
After only a few moments, Granger and Weasley wandered off leaving Potter standing there alone.
Licking his lips, Severus once again considered all he knew about Potter, the way he’d fought for and defended Severus in the aftermath of the war, the obsession he’d had with the Half-Blood Prince, the erotic mental images he’d tried to hide from Severus during their Legilimency lessons that had not always involved only girls...
“Are you enjoying yourself, Severus?” Lucius asked, coming up behind him.
“I believe I am about to,” Severus replied.
Lucius pursed his lips. “I see. Have you decided on a Valentine, then?”
Severus inclined his head. “Indeed, although I should hardly tell you.”
Lucius smirked. “Now, now, old friend. If I knew who you were pursuing, perhaps I could assist you in your campaign.”
“I don’t believe I require your help at the moment,” Severus said firmly. “Now if you’ll excuse me--” Setting off across the room, he knew Lucius and probably several other people were watching, and he mentally prepared himself for rejection. This could be a mistake. Potter could already be involved with someone else. Severus could have misread the situation, miscalculated...
“Hullo, Snape.” Potter was smiling, welcoming. “I was hoping I’d see you here. Nice party, no?”
Severus inclined his head. “It is...acceptable.”
The band struck up a tune and it seemed only natural that he ask Potter to dance. Shockingly, he accepted.
As they danced and talked, Severus relaxed. This may really work. Potter felt quite natural in his arms, and from the look in his eyes, Severus hadn’t simply imagined his interest. It looked as if his luck was holding and he was actually going to get his Valentine this year...one way or another.
