Summary: Response to snow’s spur-of-the-moment challenge on Severus Sighs: Someone punches Snape in the nose. Hard. Sequel can be found here: Cowardice.
A/N: Thanks to lemondropseven for the beta!
Severus’ head flew backwards as the force of the blow rocked through him, and he clutched at his nose as he fell. His body slammed into the wall and the picture of his mother that hung there dislodged upon impact, the glass in the frame shattering as it hit the floor. He stared at the blood pouring onto his hand as his father turned and left, slamming the front door behind him, and wished fiercely that his mother was still alive. He prodded the tender flesh of his nose gently, hissing in pain. What had he done to deserve this?

Potter’s punch knocked him off-balance, and Severus staggered slightly as he felt his nose break for the second time in his fifteen years.
“You stay away from her,” Potter hissed, spitting in his face. “You stay away from Evans.”
Severus did his best to sneer. “Lily—”
Potter punched him again, this time in the jaw, and Severus went flying. “Stay away,” he said one last time, staring down at the bruised and bloodied form of his classmate. “She deserves better than you.” With that, Potter left.
It was several hours before Severus found the strength of will to move.

This time the fist came at him as if in slow motion, and his eyes passed over the contours of each of Lupin’s knuckles before they made contact with his nose, breaking it.
He’d deserved that.
“What the hell do you think you’re playing at?” Lupin demanded, fury in his eyes.
“He deserves better than me,” Severus replied calmly, knowing he could heal the bone but unable to cast the spell. He deserved this. He’d hurt Harry.
Lupin looked at him in disgust. “You are a coward,” he snapped, turning on his heel and walking away.
And Severus was alone.
