Disclaimer: If only JKR would sign over the rights to these lads. Sadly, that will never happen, and so I shall remain poor because I make no money from this. Sad fact, true story.
Crack!
The sound of flesh striking flesh was trumped only by the distinct sound of bone cracking. Severus clutched at his face, blood streaming from between his fingers as he stared up at his father in abject terror. What had he done to deserve a life like this?
Severus stared down into Harry’s terrified face, his heart constricting painfully. Hadn’t he promised never to raise his hand against his young husband? Hadn’t he sworn that he would never become his father? That he was better than his father? Yet he had lost control of himself in a moment of jealousy, possibly costing him the one person he loved most in the world.
“Harry—”
He stopped when Harry whimpered and drew away from the outstretched hand. Reaching his other hand into his pocket, Severus withdrew his wand, careful to keep it concealed within the sleeve of his robe. Feeling wretched even as he did it, Severus cast a silent Stupify and relaxed when Harry slipped to the ground unconscious.
It took only a few moments to fix the broken nose and banish the blood from Harry’s clothing. It took Severus a bit longer to bring the tip of his wand to Harry’s head.
“Obliviate,” Severus whispered.
‘Bravo, Severus.’ Tobias Snape’s ghostly voice filled Severus’ mind with its hateful words and mocking laughter. ‘I always knew you had fight in you. Just like your pop.’
‘No, I am nothing like you,’ Severus replied to a man who had been dead longer than Harry had been alive. ‘I know when to stop.’
Severus stood and carefully floated Harry to the couch laying him down gently before turning to his desk. It hurt him to do it, but he had promised to protect Harry no matter what. Especially as Harry was the reason Severus had a second chance at life, rather than being left for dead on the floor of the shrieking shack.
‘Dear Harry,’ he wrote. ‘Know that the time we had together meant the world to me. You taught me more in three years than I did in my all my time teaching at Hogwarts. Do not come looking for me. I love you, Severus.’
With a final glance at Harry, Severus Summoned the bag he had kept packed for this very occasion, tucked his wand back into his robe and walked out the door. One day, Merlin willing, he would come back, and perhaps Harry would still be waiting. But not until Severus was certain he was no longer a threat.
