XD That's awesome, it's like knowing how it was used to make family dinners prepared with love and care, and turn it into something artistic.
I'm afraid my preference of wax based colored pencils wouldn't fare well on the wood though, not without being sanded down to a nearly smooth surface to remove the oils at least.
I think one of my favorite things to color/paint on, surprisingly enough is cheap construction paper. A lot of times it falls apart under something like that, but I found one brand that has a great weight and is pretty durable, and has become one of my favorite things to draw on. XD
I'm not as well practiced with oil pastels or oil colors as I am with the Prisma colored pencils and the chalk based colors. Contes might be alright on the greasy surface as well though.
