“I am here, my Lord,” Severus Snape announces, once he walks to the center of those summoned tonight to witness his new accolades.
Voldemort surprises him, however. “Petrificus Totalus.”
Severus goes rigid from the curse.
“I thought you were a good and faithful servant, Severus, so I was greatly displeased by the proof showing otherwise.”
Voldemort circles around him.
“You have led me to believe so many things, Severus; you have let me do so many things.
“You let me stroke your hair and touch your face and arms.
“You let me curse your body, inflame every nerve ending to test your loyalty.
“You let me use your skills in potion-making for the benefit of my goals.
“You even let me into your mind, convinced me of your trustworthiness, managed to keep this betrayal from me.
“Yet there is one place you have never let me in, isn’t there, Severus?”
Voldemort stands before him now.
“Here.”
Voldemort lays a hand on Severus’ chest, directly over his heart.
“Instead you have chosen to give this to that old fool, Dumbledore. Well, I choose to steal it back.”
He casts an ancient Hindu spell, then dips his hand into Severus’ chest and pulls out his still-beating heart. Severus’ eyes widen in disbelief and fear.
“Finite Incantatem,” Voldemort says, releasing Severus from the body-bind curse.
Severus clutches at the open wound. “My Lord, I am not--”
“Silence! You have spent all your days lying to me, Severus. No more. What should be the price?”
As he frantically looks around the room, Severus cannot answer, but the others begin to chant: “Death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death...”
Voldemort lifts the heart high for all the crowd to see.
“For love,” he sneers.
He squeezes it hard, his long nails digging into the muscle.
Severus gasps, almost doubling over in pain. He watches, horrified, as Voldemort closes his hand even tighter until the pressure becomes too great. He screams as his heart bursts, spraying blood everywhere.
Severus stares dumbfounded, his brain quickly losing oxygen.
“You will be remembered as a traitor, Severus. Goodbye.”
The light in Severus’ eyes fades out, and his corpse slumps to the floor.

Two wizards emerge from the pensieve.
“Well, my boy, I’m glad your plan worked. I was concerned that you would not be able to convince Yaxley to switch places with you this evening, but I shouldn’t have doubted his yearning for power.”
“He was easy to persuade, and I obtained a plethora of hairs to use for future polyjuice doses.”
“Excellent. And Severus?”
“Yes, Albus?”
“I am glad that you have given me your heart.” Dumbledore leans over and gives Severus a quick kiss on the lips.
