The first time Severus saw Harry, he sneered. He was an eleven-year-old carbon copy of his father, staring around the Great Hall with wonder in his mother’s eyes. Severus snorted to himself and turned back to his meal. The boy wouldn’t be coddled in his class, at any rate.
***
The first time Severus saw Harry in danger, he froze. How the hell had the boy gotten himself into a situation like this? In an enclosed space on the night of a full moon with a mass murderer and a werewolf—honestly. Did he deliberately seek out trouble?
He took in the boy’s pale face, and after a moment his derision softened. He really was just that—a boy. Perhaps Severus had been too harsh in his—
The world went black.

The first time Severus felt pity for Harry, he was deep inside his mind. The Dursley boy was taunting Harry—hardly the first of such offences Severus had seen littered across his mind tonight—but Harry just sat there, motionless, as if his cousin’s words didn’t affect him. The tactic might have fooled Harry’s tormentor, who quickly grew bored of his game, but not Severus—no, Severus knew too well how such words could sting.
Severus ended the spell and looked up to see Harry standing with his head bowed and his wand clenched tightly in his hand. “Can I go now?” he asked, a strained pitch to his voice, and Severus felt no desire to push him further.
“Dismissed,” he said simply. Harry looked up at him quickly—surprised, grateful—and then fled.
Severus sighed and adjourned to his quarters. He needed a drink.

The first time Severus saw Harry encounter Lord Voldemort, his heart burned with terror. This had all been an insanely foolish endeavor. Albus could spout all the nonsense he wanted about the power of love, but it was simply ridiculous to expect this plan to work. There was simply no way a seventeen-year-old boy could defeat the most powerful dark wizard of all time. There was too much evil in him—too much power, too much cunning. Harry simply didn’t have the strength to triumph. And Merlin, if Harry died--
“Avada kedavra!” Harry yelled. Severus, along with every other person on the battlefield, stopped and stared in shock as the body of the Dark Lord fell swiftly to the ground. There was a moment of silence, and then Harry looked up and addressed the remaining Death Eaters with burning eyes. “Are we done here?”
Apparently they were, because each and every one of them surrendered, allowing the contingent of aurors they had been battling moments ago to take them into custody. Each went with an almost dazed look on their face, as if they couldn’t quite accept that their lord was truly gone.
Only when the last of them had been cuffed and taken away did Harry allow himself to fall.

The first time Severus visited Harry in the hospital wing, all he could think was that it was very, very dark. Harry had been in intensive care to recuperate his magic for three days after the final battle, and he still wasn’t really allowed visitors. Severus had been afraid Poppy would send him away if he’d come during the daytime, so instead he’d snuck in at night. It had been silly to come at all, really, he thought to himself, preparing to leave. Poppy had reassured everyone that Harry was fine, he would just need time to recover. Severus had simply wanted to see proof of that with his own eyes, but he would hardly get that by coming when he couldn’t see a thing, and of course the boy was sleeping—
“Professor Snape?” The voice was weak, and Severus closed his eyes in an effort to hide the emotion in them. Which was silly as well, of course. It wasn’t as if the boy could see him.
“Mr. Potter.” The bedside lamp ignited and Severus spent a few moments blinking away the darkness before he could get a clear glimpse of Harry’s face. He looked haggard and pale despite the days he’d spent resting, and Severus found himself surprised even though he knew he shouldn’t have been. There had been enough power behind that spell to kill a dozen regular men. It was a miracle Harry didn’t look any worse.
But despite it all, he was smiling.
“Professor,” he repeated, his eyelids sliding closed but the smile remaining. “Will you…”
Severus knew well enough how lonely one could get after spending days alone in the hospital wing. “I’ll stay,” he said, pulling up a chair and putting the lamp out. “Now go to sleep.”
The hell with Poppy. He’d deal with her in the morning.

The first time Severus went to dinner with Harry, he was absurdly nervous. Despite telling himself there was no reason to be—multiple times, in fact, as he had tried on his fourth outfit—he still felt a fluttering feeling in his stomach each time Harry smiled.
“Severus, would you take a look at this wine list?” Harry asked, shaking Severus from his thoughts. “I really have no idea what you would like.”
“This was your bloody idea, Potter,” he snapped, though he wasn’t quite sure the irritation reached his eyes. “I should hope seven years at Hogwarts imparted upon you the necessary skills to select a bottle of wine.”
Harry just grinned and turned his eyes back to the menu.
Severus scowled. And his stomach fluttered.

The first time Severus kissed Harry, he felt like he was floating. Harry’s lips were warm and soft, and the skin of his cheek was smooth against Severus’ hand. They pulled apart reluctantly to catch their breath, and Harry’s eyes were sparkling. For a moment Severus could do nothing but stare, spellbound, at the awe-filled look on Harry’s face.
“I think that’s what it’s supposed to feel like,” Harry said softly, his breath warm on Severus’ face.
Severus shuddered at the feeling and pressed his forehead against Harry’s. “Hmm?” was all the response he could muster—he didn’t think himself quite capable of actual speech yet.
Harry coiled his arms tightly around Severus’ neck and whispered in his ear, “When you’re with the one you love.”
Severus’ eyes fell closed. If the deep sense of contentment welling in his heart was any indication, Harry was right.
