The familiar clink of ice against glass is no less tonight than any other night. The firewhiskey has not lost its potency, if the blurriness of the mantelpiece is any indication. The light from the fireplace is not stronger nor in any way eye-watering in its strength.
The pain that is always constant, a dull, stubborn, aching pain which is located in the grey matter between the not-going-to-remember-anything brain cells, is not greater than normal. He's used to it by now, he thinks. He's lived with it for many years. But today, the clink is less satisfying, the potency is not enough, the memory too strong.
Today, the light from the fireplace is so fierce his eyes sting, not that he'd ever admit it. Today is the 31st of October.
