I guess it depends. Do you generally prefer a dress shirt and sharp slacks if you're dressing up, or do you go for a dress?
As for the advice...honestly, it sounds trite, but just be yourself. When I went on my first date with my wife, I was so worried about making a good impression and impressing her, that I ended up not enjoying myself and coming off as wooden. She, in her infinite wisdom, managed to figure out that I was the biggest ball of nerves, so thankfully there was a second date. Which went much better, since I was able to breathe.
