Aslea was not Lily's favorite place. It hadn't been for some time, though she at least recognized its usefulness in her new path in life. It was swarming with Syndicate, and she of course supported them wholeheartedly. Of course she did. and if she just happened to be nearby and caught listening, well, it was only because it was just so fascinating the way they operated. She did try not to look as though she were listening, and she often carried a book with her so she could ostensibly be involved in reading. She even managed to remember to turn the pages, occasionally, so she wasn't completely stupid about her cover. She did stop in briefly to visit her parents, though they were both occupied with their own things. Her mother never had anything of interest to say -- it was always the latest fashion trend and gossip with her. Occasionally her father's contributions were more interesting, though hardly ever useful, and Lily was very concerned with usefulness lately. She wanted to be useful. She wanted to be able to funnel information that mattered. Names were lovely, but she wanted to be able to do more. While she knew it would come in time, if things played out well, she was a bit impatient on that front. After leaving her parent's place, she strolled through the streets of Aslea in no real rush to catch a train. There were plenty running, and she could always brave the subway if it came to that. Upon seeing something like a crowd of faces she recognized outside a cafe, she stopped and chatted briefly before moving on. Since she was actually hungry and the evening was nice enough -- there was a nice sea breeze blowing in from the nearby shoreline -- she thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to grab something to eat. She was here, after all; she may as well spend her dinner time listening in the off chance something of use fell into the range of her ears. Opting for the outdoor seating rather than the indoor to enjoy the sunset (and because it was a bit too crowded inside; it was a din, hardly good for listening), she parked herself at a table nearish a scattering of other occupied tables. If she caught the eye of anyone she did recognize, however marginal the recognition, she offered at the very least a nod of acknowledgement. It wouldn't kill her, she supposed, if she was invited over to sit and chat with other people for a bit. If nothing else, she thought it looked like one of the groups that hit the higher social events, and if she could get into one of those ... well, that opened a door, didn't it? Her green eyes drifted over the other tables, and to the door to see who was coming and going, and she waved to more than one person. It never hurt to maintain the existing connections here, did it? Her parents had moved in broad social circles over the years, and Lily knew most people at least by face if not by name and reputation. Yes, she thought, getting invited to something by her own means rather than through her parents ... she thought she'd very much like to aim for that. |
