Chapter 1
True to his promise, Niya brought his extra gloves to the bar at his next shift. He waited out the slow business of bartending the afternoon crowd, all slackers and drifters and the occasional reveler off early, developing a habit for fidgeting though he never had one before. This amused Niya, but also made him think. Sakito seemed so sensible despite his impeccable hair and outward wispiness, yet there was something undeniably sensual there that Niya liked so, so much since the first day they met. Admitting to himself that friendship was only a short term goal was easy, but determining how he would proceed to asking him on a date was more difficult. One step at a time, Niya told himself, don’t move too fast or risk facing flat out rejection.
Sakito stepped through the door exactly at 5:50 as he always did, and Niya caught his breath as the cold wind and Sakito’s figure swept inside. Closing the door carefully behind him, for it wouldn’t shut on it’s own, battered by the stormy gusts tearing through, he came to stand near the bar and unbutton his coat. Save for the tousled look of his hair, the wind left no mark on Sakito – he wasn’t out of breath, his cheeks were the same even color they always where, and his nose didn’t even have the barest hint of a sniffle. How he managed to look so perfect in this weather, Niya didn’t bother to try solving. He was like a child of the storm, exhilarated and protected by its temper. Inhuman.
But the mirage passed quickly, and Sakito was blinking those sleepy eyes at him, baffled that he hadn’t yet offered a greeting as he smoothed his hair. “Hello, Niya. Are you alive?”
“Uhh…hi,” he answered thickly, dragging his mind back from fantasy with a monumental effort. “Oh! I brought your gloves. I mean…my extra gloves…for you to borrow.”
Surely he had just made a massive fool of himself. Two giant steps backward, Niya counted, but then Sakito smiled plainly, no hint of mocking in his soft gaze. “Thank you, that’s very sweet.” Picking them up from under Niya’s numb fingers, he slipped them on holding up both hands front and back for examination.
“Perfect fit, ne?”
“Seem to be,” Niya agreed, pleased and reassured that his gesture would not go unappreciated. “I was afraid they’d be too big.”
Holding up a broad hand, he wiggled his fingers slightly and grinned. Sakito chuckled and placed his palm against Niya’s. “Not so big, really. See?”
“Ah…” Words escaped him; the contact was most welcome, but he didn’t know how to react or what Sakito meant by it. If it meant anything at all. With Sakito, he was quickly realizing that taking his actions at face value was probably the best way to handle his occasional odd behavior. Odd, but endearing.
“You’re gaping,” Sakito whispered, and lightly pushed Niya’s hand back down to the counter, allowing his fingers to linger as they pulled away to a safe distance. He smiled. “You’re really obvious you know. Why don’t we go out for coffee tonight after my shift? I get off early for once.”
“Sorry—what?” Niya had started to apologize, and Sakito’s proposal caught him completely off guard. He must have looked as if his eyes were about to fall out, because Sakito stifled a laugh behind his still gloved hand. “Yes…yes, tonight. What time?”
“Meet me…outside here at ten? Then we can walk to the coffee house, it’s only a block away.” His expression quiet again, Sakito finally pulled off the gloves and folded them into his coat pockets. More slowly, Niya got up from the counter, afraid he might say something stupid again if he were close to Sakito by the coat rack at that moment.
“Sounds good. I’ll see you later,” he answered, grabbing his own things and turning to walk quickly out the door. A little fountain of excitement was threatening to bubble over in his throat, possible in the form of a great shout and leap in the air, but the cold air outside effectively caged the feeling.

The storm had passed without so much as a drop of rain, merely belching out a few rolls of lackluster thunder before moving on. Niya was grateful that the weather had cleared for his first date with Sakito, allowing the moon to shine down on the star-crossed lovers, or some sort of romantic foolishness. Down-to-earth Sakito, he was quite sure, would laugh if he knew that that particular phrase even crossed Niya’s mind. And really, Niya kind of wanted to laugh at himself for it as well. In downtown Marumori, the effect of the night was very different than near his apartment. The lights shed color on the quaint storefronts and cars parked along the street, though it was a finite region of the town. Not two streets over there was a discernable difference in the amount of visibility.
Sakito’s chosen coffee house was a lively place for this time of night, with an amateur band playing in the corner and more patrons than their place of work usually saw in three days. Sakito himself looked startlingly different from earlier that evening. For the first time, his cheeks looked warm and even flushed, drowsiness vanished and a lively sparkle playing in his eyes. Strange, but Niya had not thought it possible for such a change to occur in mere hours. Not that he was complaining in the least. The overall effect was stunning, though his date was wearing only a plain T-shirt and jeans. At least he had gotten the dress code correct, though Niya still felt as if he didn’t match this vivaciously beautiful person he walked with.
The night progressed slowly – neither of them knew where to start a conversation aside from small talk about the taste of the coffee and the quality of the music. They sat together on a squashy couch Sakito had chosen in the back, away from most of the activity. In theory it seemed a wonderful idea to Niya, but on second thought he decided being among other customers might have not have been so awkward.
“So…uh…what do like to do besides work?” Niya tried to breathe some life into their quickly waning conversation. He made a note to never go out with someone he didn’t really know again after this, though he was hoping they would find a few mutual points of interest soon.
“Play video games,” Sakito answered with a small laugh, toying with his cup. Niya noticed he didn’t bother to take the lid off to let it cool; he must have a mouth of steel since the drink had already burned his several times. “Well, that’s not all I do. Though, it’s hard to go out much and make friends since I work nights. I end up staying in a lot.”
“There doesn’t seem to be much nightlife here….” Coming from a much larger city, Niya was finding it rather boring most of the time. “At least not compared to Sendai.”
Sakito appeared thoughtful and nodded. “That’s true. I’ve visited Sendai and Tokyo before and it was much more exciting there. Are you from Sendai?”
“Yes, I grew up there. Most of my friends have moved away though, so I thought it was time for me to do the same, try something new.” Niya laughed. “To be honest I picked this town at random.”
Smiling faintly, Sakito brought the cup to his lips, drawing Niya’s gaze with it. His lips were pink and smooth and petite, and he couldn’t mange to keep his mind from wandering to thoughts of kissing, of what it would feel like. The only time he had touched Sakito’s skin was when their hands brushed at work, and he entertained the notion that his lips would be as chill as his hands had been that day.
Niya didn’t realize he was still staring until his thoughts were interrupted. “Niya? Is something wrong?” Sakito asked softly, and suddenly he was closer than before. Inches away, in fact. Niya’s heart jumped in this throat.
“No,” he breathed, “not at all. Except…”
Sakito had time for a brief, quizzical look before Niya kissed him, twisting to the side and curling a hand around the back of his head. His lips weren’t hot, but they weren’t cold either, dispelling Niya’s odd fantasy. Sakito seemed entirely unsurprised by this new development, even eager after a moment, parting his lips invitingly under Niya’s.
Breaking for a moment to savor the slightly sweet taste – Sakito must have been wearing flavored lip balm – he grinned and noticed he received a little smile in return. Sakito was the instigator of the second kiss, a surprise with a mischievous glint in his gaze, he caught Niya’s lower lip with his and sucked gently. His eyes were closed, though Niya couldn’t bring himself to close his own.
When Sakito stopped, he pulled away slowly, tracing a slow line along Niya’s cheek with the tip of his finger. “Why didn’t you just say that’s what you wanted?” His expression was as sweet as the lingering taste on Niya’s tongue.
Chuckling, Niya dropped his hand down to his waist instead. “I didn’t know if you would be interested.”
“Of course I am. You forget who asked who on this date.” Sakito adjust his position to lean against Niya’s shoulder, pulling the idle hand more tightly across himself as he continued quietly, “I thought you were cute from the day you turned in your application.”
“That was you? I hardly remember who I handed it to I was so tired from moving.” Niya laughed at the memory of how he had gone in unwittingly with part of it printed on his face from falling asleep on the paper earlier in the day.
“Indeed. I’ve been waiting for this since.”
