Contrary to popular belief, Mary Christmas could be dragged away from her little office down at the morgue. While she missed the simple concept of rain, snow and hail, the weather no longer deterred her from setting foot outside. Every day turned out to be the same within these walls, and every day after work, Mary would sit down on a bench and watch a steady stream of people moving homeward.
Next to nothing escaped Mary's curiosity. At first, these so-called Specialis Gens had stuck out of the crowd like a sore thumb, but as the days passed, she found that more of them were getting used to their surroundings. Slowly, that was a given, but they were getting there. Sometimes, the urge to don herself some pompoms to cheer them on to the tune of a silly little song, came upon her, but so far? No pompoms, no songs. Maybe someday, those old cassette tapes might come in handy after all.
Instead, she'd just watched everyone and made up little stories about their lives, until she felt that perhaps this day, she could talk to one of them and see if her guesses were true. And that's what she did. "Hi!" She gave them her best, most encouraging smile. "Are you new here?"
