WHO The Hart Family
WHEN 6pm
WHERE The Hart Apartment
WHAT A birthday party
Greyson finally arrived home after his internship around 5:30pm, dropped his bag on his bed, and made his way to the small dining area just off of the living room and kitchen. The apartment the three lived in was modest, comfortable. Janine, Greyson's mother, was just putting dinner on the table when her son took his seat. His sister, Rebecca, was texting on her cellular phone while having some conversation with their mother. Yes, I know. I told him already. No, mom, I didn't get a call back for that job interview... Greyson chuckled and shook his head before taking a drink from the glass of milk set before him while Janine took her own seat to his right. The table was square with a dark wash, cute place mats set out at four seats despite only three people eating at the table.
"How was work, Grey?"asked Janine as she pushed her hair behind her shoulders and took a drink from her own glass.
"Not bad. There's a lot going on right now. People are still recovering from the bastardization that was spread. I can't talk about most of it, though. It's confidential." He shrugged, fingers twirling a fork through a heap of spaghetti. He would always be biased toward his mother's spaghetti and meatballs, Greyson was sure. No matter what his future wife made...though she would never know!
"Oh, yeah. That's really too bad about that. I can't believe there are people out there who are so close-minded!" returned their mother before eating. Rebecca rolled her eyes and ate. She didn't care much for all of the weird things happening around here, but she wasn't so hateful of the Special's, either.
"You know,' said Janine. "Your father would be proud of what you're doing, Greyson. He always said you would do something great with your life. Now you're out there helping people and finding reasons for what's happening. That's amazing."
"Thanks, mom." Greyson smiled. He knew their father would have been brought up eventually. It was his birthday, after all. The man had been dead for a long, long time now but they would always celebrate his birthday. They even had ice cream cake in the freezer. Celebrating was just a little way they kept his memory alive. Rebecca hated it. She didn't really like crying in front of people, even her family, so she usually avoided talking about their father. She didn't know him very well and that was what bothered her the most. Greyson had a good few years with him. He had gotten to live out a lot of his childhood with the man. Not her. She didn't get fun memories of being pushed on a swing or playing in the leaves. She didn't have a memory of a sports game or playing dolls, bad jokes or making a mess in the kitchen. Those were things Greyson had that he tried to share...but it wasn't the same.
After a quiet dinner ended the three ate ice cream cake on the couch, watching an old movie that probably shouldn't have ever been made. The graphics were horrible! But it was a classic. Then they departed ways around 8:30. Rebecca went to her room and sat on the computer, Janine remained in the living area to read, and Greyson made his way back to his bedroom. With a sigh he half-shut the door behind himself, dragging himself across the room to sit on the bed. He smiled slightly, though he was sad, and quickly made an entry in his journal before glancing at a picture on his dresser. Grey was a family man at heart and would be a great father one day, but for now he just wanted to remember his own old man. In the picture the two stood, grinning like idiots at a baseball game. Greyson wasn't a sports kind of guy but he enjoyed it when he could and as a kid he had liked it more than he did today. The score in the background read the home team as the winner.
"Thanks, again, for the memories."
Greyson smiled lightly as he bowed his head and closed his eyes. His hands met and fingers laced in his lap. He sighed, gave a little nod, and took a deep breath.
"I miss ya."
