Kelly stared at Steven like she couldn't tell if he was serious or joking - it was something of a recurring problem she'd noticed. "I haven't been locked in my room," she insisted. "And just because I'm not out... 'gathering intel' that doesn't mean I don't care about everyone here." The implied accusation that she was alienating her patients stung more than she would ever admit, especially to him.
"The fact of the matter is that I'm not a shrink - and I don't like to pretend to be something I'm not. And besides which, I've been pretty busy the last couple of days." She looked for a second like she wanted to say more, but she wasn't sure if she should. Instead she returned to the table and set her cup down after one last sip.
"I don't need to control it," she said softly, still staring into her cup, "I need it to go away." She knew that wasn't going to happen any time soon, though. "I'll work on it," she told him, making eye contact so he knew that she meant it: she fully intended to work on using her freak-of-nature power as soon as she had the free time for it.
"I'm just a little busy right now..." It sounded like the lame excuse it was, though she actually did mean it.
