"This is not my job," Dream said with just a hint of disgust. The world around them was in ruins, but none more so than Devil's Peak. "I gave you a new job," Lucifer commented, his arms crossed over his chest. "Nightmares for them all. I don't want them to forget who's in charge now." Dream snorted. "You think you're in charge? God's just letting you play the game, this is her ball field." Lucifer sighed with disgust. "Go do your job, Dream. There's a little girl who needs spiders in her bed." Dream didn't even nod or acknowledge these words as he walked away. Lucifer stayed still for a moment, as if taking everything in, before calling out, "I know you're there, my queen. Come on out."
A small child with long, curly red hair stepped out from behind a car turned on it's side, her long white dress barely skimming above the filthy, ruined road as she made her way over to the Devil's side. She looked up at the tall man, bright eyes giving the impression of taking everything in and yet concentrating solely on him all at the same time. The child appeared to be no more than five years old, but when she spoke her words were crisp and clear and held a slight authoritative tone. "Such a smart Dark son have I," she said sweetly and took the man's hand with both of her's. "Has Dream been giving you a hard time?"
"I wish my problem was Dream," he said with another sigh. "And darling, you know I don't like the child shape. Not much height difference, but at least I feel like I'm talking to an adult." He paused for a moment, before continuing. "Our problem is our son, Frankie. He's enjoying himself too much with these zombies. I love to see my children happy, but just the other day, one of his pets tried eating MY brain." He shook his head. "That's our son for you."
The little girl gave a laugh and just as suddenly as she appeared was gone, a woman with the same red hair and bright eyes now standing beside the man, her hands still holding one of his. She looked up at him in amusement. "You care too much for the vessel and not enough for the soul, dear Beelzebub," she said sweetly but her tone was slightly scolding as she said one of his many names, one she personally didn't care for- it brought back memories of his first revolt against her Great Kingdom. Giving a little sigh, she released his hand and crouched down to the ground, gently picking up a dead bird at her feet. The thing was festering and decaying but she held it with all of the love and caring as a mother would hold their baby. She held the bird against her cheek then gave it a kiss on the head before standing again, the dead bird still in her hands, it's wings pointing back down to it's previous resting place. "He is doing what he was told, although a stricter rein on his little pets might be called for. Have you spoken with him about it?" She kept her eyes on the bird and began wiping the dirt and grime from it's feathers.
Lucifer watched her pick up the bird, his lip drawn back in a sneer. "You care too much for this Earth. Why are you letting me do this?" He shook his head. "I talked to him again and again, and that innocent face of his promises with those innocent eyes that he'll be a good boy, but he gets so excited. I wouldn't be surprised if he was fu...." He cut off quickly, glancing at the beautiful vision standing next to him.
She ran her fingertip around one of the little bird's eyes, tracing along it's feathers, her hand soon becoming covered in the filth as she cleaned the poor creature. It had been beautiful, and now it was ruined... "All things beautiful must be ruined. You can never be too beautiful, or too smart, or too talented for too long... That is life. They are born, they will bloom, and they will fade and die. How else can you appreciate the beauty of that one perfect moment if you do not know pain, or sadness, hurt or loss?" God held the dead bird closer to her chest, her eyes squeezed shut as if in great anguish before opening again and surveying the street they were standing in the middle of. "These gifts I gave to them, my favorites, and they have been squandered, discarded, defiled. Humanity has... disappointed me. And they must be punished. Like all children who displease their mother, their father." God turned to look back up at Lucifer, her lips twisting into a sardonic expression. "You should know this better than any other..." She ignored what he had been about to say about their newest child.
"Nothing is forever but us, my former lover," he said, reaching over to take the bird from her hands. "If you love this creature so much, why don't you give it one more life? Rigor hasn't kissed this one, it seems. It has a chance." He held the bird to her lips. "Give it the kiss of life before it receives the kiss of eternal death." He just wanted to see what his former lover, the creator of all thing, would do. "Give it a kiss. It will only live a few more weeks, but it'll have the chance to fly. I've always wanted to fly, but my love would not give me the power, just the wings." He was bitter about this, but he didn't let it show.
She let him take the bird from her now dirty hands and watched every move he made like a hawk, ready with a reproach on the tip of her tongue should he handle her dead child too roughly. "There is always the chance for new life, for salvation," she said calmly, putting a hand up to gently push the dead bird's body away from her face as she gazed up at Lucifer, her features set in a grim expression. "One only needs to ask." She took the bird's body from the man and gave it a gentle kiss on the top of it's head, but it remained dead still. She lowered her hands and the bird began to turn to ash, blowing away in the breeze. "But when one's life is over, it's best to let it end... That is one of the many things that angers me about humans, and what I love- they always want more," God said softly as the last of the bird's ashes flew away in the breeze. She turned back to face Lucifer and put a hand on either side of the man's face, her thumbs tracing along his cheekbones as she stared lovingly up at him. "You had the power, but you and humanity have a lot of things in common, dear, Dark one." She gave a little sigh and brought his head down to kiss his forehead. "But now we're treading on an old argument, and I don't want to fight today."
"I'm made to fight," Lucifer said bitterly. "I'm made to betray. Isn't that my job? I tempted Eve, and I tempted Judas. Now look at Judas. Eternal damnation and he couldn't be happier. I considered not letting him back on Earth, but you know him. He pouts, gives you those pretty blue eyes, and he's back on Earth, running rampant. Rumor has it he's playing tricks. I call him the Trickster."
"That is not all you are," she said with a trace of disgust in her voice, letting go of his face and stepping away from the Devil, folding her arms over her chest and glaring down the street, although she had to chuckle when he spoke of Judas. "As much as I pity that man his nature is perfect for that role, just like he was before..." She trailed off, thinking of all of the favorite humans she had blessed, and how so few had actually lived up to her expectations. "You certainly are doing a good job ruining the world, Lucifer, you and Frankie."
"Did I hear my name?" Frank asked, appearing next to them and grinning like a fool. He was a bit dirty, mostly from chasing random zombies around when they went after the wrong people. Like Lucifer. And that was something he was still trying to figure out. They were usually much better trained than that. He must have missed one or something.
Lucifer turned to face his son, and sighed. His eyes then went to the beautiful red head next to him and said, "He's your son, talk to him, will you?" He waved his hand in dismissal. "Now where is Judas. If you're here, he's close by. An anvil won't drop on our heads, will it?"
God turned as well and her face changed quickly from mild upset to surprised delight as she threw her arms in the air and embraced her son as if he were a small child instead of the man he had grown into. "Darling! I haven't seen you in days!" She beamed at him, bringing a hand up to run through his hair lovingly. "If that man tries to drop an anvil on us I would expect you, being the Dark Prince, to be able to punish him accordingly, Lucifer," she said to the Devil but kept her eyes on Frankie, kissing him lightly on the cheek. "Oh you are so handsome. My beautiful son. How are your pets, love?"
Frank pouted at the mention of his absent friend, looking every bit like the child his mother still treated him as. It wasn't that much of a stretch really with his height. "He wouldn't come play with me today." He was lapping up the attention from her like an attention starved puppy though. "Some of them don't listen too well. I think I gotta train them better or something. Otherwise he burns them all up," he said, pointing at Lucifer like he was telling on him.
God glared over at the Devil, her arms still wrapped around Frankie and holding him close to her, her white dress seeming to swirl around him protectively as the wind picked up. "Do you really need to set them all on fire?" She admonished, looking at the Devil as if he were the guilty party, which he usually was. She didn't give him an inch to explain or defend himself though, her attention back to Frankie and she continued to pet the boy's head, running her fingers through his hair and combing it back. "You just need to have a stronger hand with them, dear. Humans are stubborn enough when they're alive. Do you want mommy to talk to them?" She asked sweetly.
Lucifer snorted, shaking his head. Yes, of course it was two against one, but what choice did he have? He took a look around while the mother and son cuddled and spotted something strange for this town. A white bunny rabbit scampering down the street, nose wiggling as he sniffed his surroundings. "I don't believe it, its a-" he began, but his words were cut off by a loud bang, and the rabbit fell dead. "Woo-hoo!" he heard Judas shout. "We gots ourselves a zombie rabbit, Frankie!"
That was all it took for Frank to start squirming out of her hold and run off in the direction of Judas' voice. "A rabbit!?! Can we make him like the killer bunny in that old movie you showed me once?" He didn't even care that he was telling on them both for sneaking up to Earth in the past. It's not like they could be grounded or anything.
Scooping up the rabbit, he turned and headed back over towards his parents with his newest pet.
God reluctantly let Frankie wriggle form her hold, pouting some when he ran off for the bunny. She quirked a brow up at Lucifer. "I thought I said no animals would be changed into zombies?" She ran a hand through her long red hair, getting most of it out of her face before crossing her arms over her chest, smiling again when Frankie returned, holding the little white (dead) rabbit. "Sweetheart, it's adorable, but what did I say about changing the animals?"
Lucifer shrugged. "You're the one who introduced him to Judas. What did you expect? The first night they spent the night together I caught Judas giving our darling son a hand job. Just cuz I created evil doesn't mean everything is my fault. Talk to him about the animals. But I'm warning you, they got a herd of killer cows in Alabama."
"But it's cute and fluffy! No one will ever suspect it's a zombie rabbit!" Frank said looking up at her again and pouting once more. The look usually worked when he wanted to get his way after all. He was easily distracted though and was soon turning again to look for his much taller friend, spotting Judas on a rooftop and waving rather frantically at him. "We need to start a zombie bunny army," he shouted in the others direction. "How cool would that be!"
She pinched the bridge of her nose in annoyance and tried not to look directly at his pleading face. She really should have made him an ugly child, maybe then he wouldn't have gotten his way so often... "'Killer cows'? Oh my..." She stopped herself from taking her own name in vain and finally looked up at Frankie, pointing her finger right at his nose so he would focus. "You can keep the cows but no other animals, got it?" She gave him a steady look before glancing up at the rooftop that had gotten his attention and snapped her fingers, the sky immediately rumbling just above Judas' head. "And you stop seducing my son!"
Judas leapt down from the rooftop and walked casually over to them, the gun in his hand still smoking. "Seducing your son? When did I ever make Frankie do something he didn't want to?" he asked, ignoring the devil and focusing on God. "Besides, Frankie likes playing house with me. We got us a new kitten. It was delicious." He leaned over and licked Frankie's cheek. "If we can't have a zombie bunny army, we can at least have a snack."
Frank sighed and pouted even more when she said no more zombie animals. "Can I trade some of the cows for bunnies? Or maybe those dogs like in the Resident Evil movie? Those would be cool!" Making a face, he giggled and squirmed away when Judas licked his cheek. "No eating my pets! I wanna keep this one." Since he probably wasn't getting anywhere with God, he turned his attention to Lucifer instead. "Can I keep it?"
Lucifer smiled at his son and reached out to cup his cheek. "Of course you can, son," he said, glancing at God. "It is our job to create Hell on earth, is it not? Judas," he continued, turning to face the amazon sized man. "Don't you have any other friends?" Judas frowned, putting away his gun. "You ought to know the answer to that one. No one loves the betrayer of Christ. Except for Frankie here."
The glare God leveled Lucifer with would have been more than enough to make the entire Nazi army empty his bowels right then and there, but she knew it was useless with the man before her and, really, what else had she been expecting? With a snap of her fingers Judas was across the street and a white rag appeared in her hand, of the softest material ever to grace the earth, and she stepped forward and cleaned the spot on Frankie's face where Judas had licked, then moved on to another spot, and then another. She ignored Lucifer and his smile. "One bunny, and that is it, Frankie. I mean it."
