It was a bright summer day, the skies were a beautiful shade of blue and white puffy clouds were here and there. The sand under her feet was as soft as velvet and as white as snow, brightly colored shells scattered here and there like little jewels for the children to run around and pick up. The waves crashing against the sand was the clearest, sharpest blue never seen on earth, gentle as it reached high up on the sand only to be sucked back into the endless ocean. Tall palm trees swayed further up the beach, with beautiful island vegetation and the sounds of laughter and music in the air. Her kingdom was forever changing to suit the many pleasant and wonderful scenes humanity had grown to love about the world below, and the beach was full of happy people, not overcrowded but certainly not bare, and God smiled down fondly as a pair of children raced past her, their buckets full of their treasures. She wore a one piece white swim suit, simply cut and modest but still attractive. She made her way to an open beach umbrella of white and a large red beach towel and laid down on her stomach, crossing her arms in front of her and resting her chin against them, her red hair streaming around her. She waited, seemingly patient.
Dream decided to finally take God up on her appointment. Things were slow down below and he finally had the strength to make it up to her palace in the sky. He was wearing his mask, the one that helped him a little when he was feeling weak. It looked like an old gasmask with an extended nose like an anteater. His pouch of sand was tied around his waist and his ruby amulet hung from his neck. He walked over to where he saw the fiery red hair and stood over her silently, waiting for her to acknowledge him, as that was the custom in kingdoms.
Feeling Dream beside her, God slowly raised her head and looked over her shoulder at the man, quirking a brow at his odd ensemble, although the eternals often had eccentric tastes. Pushing up with her hands, God sat up and surveyed the man, not minding that he towered over her. She ran a hand through her red hair which was behaving itself thanks to the gentle breeze and smiled warmly up at him, their previous meeting seemingly forgotten. "Morpheus, thank you for coming. But you're not dressed properly for a day at the beach."
Morpheus removed his mask, his black hair falling in sheets around his face. He looked down at his wardrobe and quirked a brow at God. "This is my attire. If you want something more fitting," he snapped his fingers and ended up in a pair of black trunks, his skin almost blindingly white against the sand. "So what's this little meeting about?" He asked, kneeling down on the blanket next to her. He looked out over the beach, his eyes black pools with glittering stars.
God scooted over, making room for Morpheus on the blanket, glad that he was being so pleasant. Of course his moods changed just as quickly as the wind so she was sure to be on guard, even if she didn't appear it. Her brows raised high in surprise when he changed into swim trunks, she had to admit the man looked good, pale skin and all. With barely a thought the umbrella adjusted so that the tall man was under it's protection and she smiled up at the Lord of Dreams as she leaned back on her elbows to survey the man. "Thank you," she said pleasantly, watching his face, waiting for a pair of children to pass by before continuing. God looked down at her hand on the blanket, only a few inches away from the sand and she began to play with it absentmindedly when she looked back up at Morpheus. "Of course you know I saw your journal entry, my love?"
"Nothing escapes your notice," he said, but not unkindly. He leaned over and took her hand away from the sand, reaching into his pouch and pulling out sand that glittered like crushed diamonds. "Run these through your fingers and make a wish," he whispered. pouring the sand into her hand. "Then blow the dust and watch your dream come true."
Rather than show her uncertainty and risk insulting the Dream Lord, God looked down at the sand and let it slip slowly between her fingers, joining the sand already on the long beach. When only dust remained she thought of a wish and smiled, blowing it away from Dream, hoping it wasn't a nasty little trick to punish her.
Morpheus leaned back on his elbows, waiting for her wish to come into being. He had no idea what it was, but he was curious to see what the All Mighty would wish for. He looked around, waiting to see what would happen. He was patient today, a big surprise considering the last time they met.
God waited, happy when the man settled in next to her but curious as to how her wish would come true. A minute passed and they sat there in companionable silence, the soft roar of the waves, a distant call of sea birds, and a song from a steel drum playing on the wind. The breeze picked up and God leaned her head back, enjoying the feeling of the wind. At that moment a toddler raced past them, laughing excitedly as his mother chased along after him, arms thrown back and a look of pure joy on the child's face. God smiled at the sound, not bothering to lift her head to look. A child's laughter was her favorite sound and she enjoyed it. Beside her, she heard a soft noise coming form her previously silent companion. Lifting her head, God looked over at the man and had to do a double take. It had worked!
It wasn't the child that made Morpheus laugh. It was actually a memory triggered by the child. It was of Death telling him a story about a flicker show she once saw of a flying nanny who came down to look after the children. He couldn't remember what it was called, but she'd been nearly giddy with delight about fat pigeons that the memory made him laugh out loud now, though he hadn't found it funny at the time. "Sup...super...supercali...I can't remember the word, but it's really long," he said, talking like they'd been having a conversation.
God continued to watch the man, enjoying the sound of his laughter. It filled her with warmth and made him look even more handsome. She knew instantly what he was referring to and chuckled as well. Putting one leg over the other, she laid back on the towel with an arm cushioning her head, enjoying the sound of Morpheus' laughter mixing with her other children's.
When God didn't help him out, he just shrugged and let it go, letting out a few random chuckles, but settling down a bit. He took a look around and saw nothing had changed in the scenery, and this confused him. "What did you wish for?" he asked, honestly stumped.
God gazed up at Morpheus, a warm smile on her face. Bending one leg at the knee, God shifted some to get more comfortable before finally speaking. "I wanted to hear you laugh... I couldn't remember the last time I had heard it and that's saying something, since I remember everything," she said with a grin and a wink. "Now if only I could get you to do that without the powder."
Morpheus looked scandalized for a moment before bursting into laughter again. "I've never had much reason to laugh before," he said with a shrug. "I've always been so busy. And lately I've just been too tired." He shrugged, laying back on the blanket. "What would be perfect is if there had been food. I never fed on anything but dreams. I don't know how anything tastes. Just dreams and nightmares."
God's grin widened when Morpheus treated her to more of her new favorite sound and she turned on her side to face him, a hand propping her upper body up as she smiled down at him. "I bet those taste really yummy," she deadpanned before her grin was back and she snapped her fingers, a bowl of grapes, melons, strawberries, and cherries suddenly appearing between them. "Try some," she said and picked a strawberry for herself. Who would have thought the Dream Lord had such simple requests? God decided to meet all of her children again, hoping to gain a more personal footing with her powerful creations and then moving on to the humans. They had been her favorites for so long, it was time to start paying attention to her other lovelies.
Morpheus looked down at the fruit bowl and was sorely tempted, but he knew it wasn't that easy. "You know I can't eat that right now," he said, not taking his eyes off the fruit. "In doing so I'll only make myself weaker. I'm not like you. I can't pretend to be human. I wish I could, but I can't. It was just how we were made. That's not your fault, though." He added quickly. "You only had a hand at what went into us. They wanted to make sure we couldn't fall."
God looked down at the man, studying him for a few moments while they considered every option. The fruit would be the sweetest, the freshest, but it would also do exactly what Dream said. However, she hadn't summoned him to torment and torture him, despite how their last meeting had ended. God moved to lay on her stomach, reaching over and picking up a small cherry between two fingers. She inspected it closely and then held it out to Morpheus, seeing what he would do. "You want to taste it, right? So put this cherry between your teeth but don't bite down or let your tongue touch."
He knew that God wasn't trying to torture him. He also knew that she didn't fully understand him and the way he was made. He couldn't feed on what the humans ate just like humans couldn't survive on what he did. He took the cherry from her fingers, but instead of putting it in his mouth, he brought it to her lips. "You eat. I'm content to just watch."
God couldn't help but chuckle some, Dream just wasn't getting it. She took the cherry between her lips and enjoyed the little fruit, glad she had the power to make all pits disappear instead of having to spit them out. She hated spitting, just like lying and cheating. She waited until it was all gone and licked her lips before smiling again at Morpheus. "Thank you, hun," she said and rested her cheek against her palm, studying the man. It wasn't worth fighting over and, besides, they had other things to discuss. "I've thought about what we talked about in your realm."
"You mean what we fought about?" Morpheus corrected, shaking his head with another rare chuckle. "Why do you want to bring that up again?" he asked, meeting her green eyes with eyes just as green. He'd been so long in this realm that he was starting to take on human characteristics.
"Well I didn't want to label it with such an ugly word but there you go I guess," God said waving a hand in the air dismissively. "Yes, what we fought about..." She raised a hand to run through his hair, liking the green his eyes reflected but missing his usual black, star filled gaze. But he did look good with a splash of color. "I know you were not happy with me, nor was I with you. However I have been thinking long and hard about all that you said and I admit that you had some valid points. In the matter of your strength I see you weakening, but others are thriving, like your sisters Desire and Delirium." She sighed and dropped her hand away from his face, trailing her finger instead along the red beach blanket. "This whole ordeal has affected everyone in very different ways. The reason why I summoned you is to give you a little of what you wanted. Are you still interested?" God quirked a brow at the dream Lord and waited, hoping for one answer but suspecting he would say another.
Morpheus frowned, looking down at his cherry stained fingertips. "No one wants to dream anymore. They're willing to give into being crazy, and lustful desires, but they don't want me. They don't want my brother, Destiny. They even prefer Despair. That means I have to work even harder to get my job done. I suppose I could quit, but it would only result in me starving. And I can't die. And I know what it feels like to starve." He sighed. "I want to thrive. I want the strength. I'd be lying if I said I didn't." He raised his fingers to his lips and kissed the tips where he'd held the cherry. "Did I ever tell you about Nada? This was before your time. Way before your time. There was a people here that lived in a city. I suppose you made Adam and Eve from dreams I gave you of them. I was in love with her. She saw me once under her glass tower and she fell in love with me. When she found out I was a part of the Endless, she killed herself to avoid being with me, to avoid total destruction, but it had been too late for her people. Her soul is in Hell, in a place so far that I doubt even Lucifer himself knows it exists. This is why I don't let myself feel love anymore. It would ruin everything you tried so hard to create. I couldn't do that to you."
Well that certainly hadn't been what she was expecting. God listened to Morpheus' words, knowing that it was the truth he told her. After all, he was one of the Endless, standing there the day she and Lucifer had arrived in this realm. She remembered all of it, the seven lined up as she and her ex-mate had first set foot on the land. It had been but a desert then, in between times. And it would be a desert again, if her creations did not shape up. Creations that had come to her in a dream... But it was her job to have a firm control over this earth, one Lucifer had been supposed to help her with, until he fell... God watched Morpheus' eyes while he spoke and knew he meant what he said, even if she didn't follow all of it. She snorted derisively when he mentioned her creations. "My children... I find it hard to see how things on earth could get any more fucked up," she said, laying back on her stomach again but keeping her eyes on him. God thought for a moment. "Is your love so powerful it can destroy worlds?" She asked, though any trace of teasing was long gone. It was a truly sad story he had told her, although God felt nothing for this Nada, only that it had hurt Dream.
Morpheus whipped his head around when he heard her snort, his eyes going wide. "You'd risk it? You'd risk fire balls raining down from the sky, destroying all you created? Destroying what family you do have? They may not seem loyal to you, but they're still your sons, your former lover. The population of the world. It would make it all the more fucked up to destroy them over something that could never come into being anyway, no matter your beauty and your kind heart. If that means I have to leave the earth's realm, starve in my own, I will. I'll do it. I'll do anything for those I..." He shook his head, no longer sure what he was saying. He rose to his feet, his eyes black pools of starlight and his body cloaked again in his robes. "Forgive me, Almighty, but I think I've been here too long. I'm no longer thinking clearly."
Deus got to her knees but didn't make to stand like Morpheus had, merely looking up at him, her form altering slightly to show her true persona. The swim suit melted away to a black dress but she was still barefooted. Brighter skin, bright green eyes, and dark red hair falling even longer than her human form's. All at once the people disappeared on the beach and the sky grew darker, as if a storm were brewing, beyond the gray clouds the cosmos shown. This was the world as Gods saw it. Unlike the skies of earth this one did not reflect God's mood, but anothers, and the other was not a happy camper. Still Deus sat calmly, looking up at Morpheus, a brow raised. "Lord of Dreams, you're rambling. Sit back down... Please?"
Morpheus looked at the sky with alarm, but the calm of God was infecting, and he found himself sinking back to his knees. "I...what are....are you doing this?" He asked, trying to remain as cool as his midnight eyes. Flames danced in his robe, showing his rising panic. He reached out his hand but instead of finding hers, he found the bowl of fruit, fingers tracing over a grape. "Ah fuck it," he said, picking it up and tossing it into his mouth, biting down on the piece of fruit. Juice exploded in his mouth, but the taste was sour. He refused to spit it out though.
Deus smiled reassuringly when Dream finally sat back down, taking his free hand in both of her's and stroking it softly, as if it were a frightened animal. "This is how it is for me, Morpheus. Don't worry, they aren't angry at you," she said with a sad smile as the sky rumbled faintly. Once it stopped she watched him pop the grape into his mouth in amusement before leaning forward and pressing her lips to his, giving him a taste of her own energy.
Morpheus didn't like the taste of the grape, but he swallowed it down and nearly choked on it, but then God had pressed her lips against his and felt the energy course through his own veins. Flowing like blood. The grape soured in his belly, so he just pressed his lips harder against hers before breaking away. "No, I won't let you do this," he spat out, cringing with remorse for having to reject her. "I won't let you be destroyed."
God looked up at Morpheus with wide eyes, certainly not expecting that, especially with how well the man had responded to her kiss only a week ago. "Surely I won't be destroyed for giving you a little more energy? I thought that was what you had wanted in the first place." She pressed the back of her hand against his forehead, brushing a few strands of hair out of his face. "You are tired and I've agreed to help... Besides," she continued with a playful smirk. "I'm God. I can do whatever the hell I want."
Morpheus would have blushed if he could, feeling embarrassed for having misread her signals. "I thought....oh, well, nevermind then." Damn, even the Endless could be idiots from time to time. "I thank you for the energy," he said gratefully, bowing his head. "It will be a great help." He took her hand and kissed it. "I'm in your debt."
Deus smiled as he kissed her hand, her other coming up to run through the Lord of Dream's hair, combing it away from his face lovingly. So he believed his loving someone would end the world? She would like to put that to the test but stopped herself, not wanting to stress the Endless out too much. Especially this one... When he released her hand and looked back up at her God took a moment to enjoy his black eyes before tilting her head to the side inquisitively. "What did you think, Morpheus?" She wanted to kiss him again.
