Ella knew she was supposed to be asleep, but she couldn’t resist the pull of the grand piano, sneaking down the hall on her tiptoes and slipping inside the massive ballroom. Eyes lighting up, she settled on the bench, staring in awe as she brushed her fingertips over the keys. This particular piano was off limits, but she had heard her mother playing it once. She wanted to hear that sound again.
Glancing over her shoulder to make sure she was alone, she gently placed her fingers over the keys, biting her lip as the first note rang out. It sounded as beautiful as she remembered. Maybe her mother wouldn’t mind if she played it just this one time.
