Draco gave a final flick of his wand, and stood back to admire his work. The fairy lights embossing the willow trees that formed a canopy in the copse behind the manor were a particularly nice touch, he thought.
He'd never done anything like this for Tracey, though why not, he couldn't quite say. He supposed that when they'd first fallen into bed together- the result of her close partnership on a case involving spectacularly nasty curses- everything had been so heady and rather new to him that lolling under the covers had seemed more than sufficient, and as their relationship waxed and waned, that had been an easy habit to maintain. He'd been so very busy with his career. And she with hers. But now it seemed egregious that he'd never made a romantic gesture toward Tracey, the person who knew him better, perhaps, than any other in the world.
Draco could only hope that late was better than never.
He'd owled her with little detail, only asking her to meet him, giving her coordinates for apparation, and asking her to arrive hungry. Then he'd gone about making the copse as ethereal as possible. White wine sat chilling in a basket, courtesy of a cooling charm. There was an array of food- cheeses, chicken, fresh fruits, a decadent bete noir. Rose petals adorned the plush blanket he'd laid out; a separate bouquet of tea roses awaited. It might be a very cliched, or classic, interpretation of romance, but Draco thought she'd be pleased with it.
The only thing missing was Tracey. Draco tried not to pace as he awaited her arrival.
