Lavender shook her head. "I wouldn't exactly call it brave. I was terrified for a good long while after it had happened. Then I stopped being terrified... because I didn't want this," she paused and gestured to her neck and shoulder, "to define me."
She watched him as he ate, trying to read his expression and trying to figure out what made his mood shift so drastically back and forth. The question had just been casual. She didn't have a motive for asking beyond her own curiosity.
"Most people did," she said lightly. "Reasons, I mean."
Reaching for her drink, she dipped her head a bit to catch his attention. "Look. Zach. It's been years. I don't have any opinion on what people chose to do when they were seventeen. You made the choice that was best for you."
