Eroica Playlist I
By: Anneko a.k.a. danakszoul

Notes: I have no tech ability and can't actually upload any of my music anywhere/am always online on a borrowed computer, so this isn't xposted to the Fan Soundtrack project, but I am totally obsessed with playlists, so below the cut is my first Eroica playlist (yes, there are more than one-- that's how many songs I have)
Playlist I- Dorian and Klaus
Living In the Sunlight, Loving In the Moonlight- Tiny Tim (okay, so I'm a tremendous dork. Now that I have that out of the way... this song is on Dorian's playlist because it embodies the playful, happy-go-lucky facet of Dorian. Lyrics such as 'Just take it from me, I feel as free as any daughter. I do just what I like to just when I like and how I want it'.)
The English Rose- Boy Meets Boy (this is from an off-broadway musical from the seventies, and I am obsessed with it. The song is a paean to 'the English Rose'-- 'Just picture perfection in silken clothes, a dazzling adonis from head to toes, complete with an aristocratic nose, the English Rose is one of those'. In fact, aside from eye colour, this song describes Dorian perfectly. If you can find a cast recording for this show, I reccomend it all-around as just great fun, and many of the songs have made it into one of my Eroica playlists)
The Scarlet Pimpernel- The Scarlet Pimpernel (More showtunes. For Dorian-as-Eroica. Although Eroica's pursuits are far less noble than the Pimpernel's, I find there's a great correlation between the two-- a daring and adventurous Englishman who masquerades as foppish dolt of an aristocrat between capers.)
Keeping The Customer Satisfied- Simon and Garfunkel ('It's the same old story, yeah, Everywhere I go. I get slandered, libeled, I hear words I never heard in the bible! And I'm one step ahead of the shoeshine, two steps away from the county line, just trying to keep the customer satisfied, satisfied' 'Deputy sherrif said to me, tell me what you come here for, boy, You better take your bags and leave, You're in trouble boy and now you're headin' into war'-- another Dorian-as-Eroica song, and a little bit caper-y.)
Mona Lisa- Michelle Shocked (For Eroica. Seductive, melancholy violin, and lyrics about robbing the Louvre blind)
No More Mr. Nice Guy- Alice Cooper (Sure, you might think it'd be a Klaus song, but for me, it's a Dorian song. 'I used to be such a sweet young thing, 'til they got a hold of me' 'My friends all read the papers, they can't be seen, with me' and 'He said 'you're sick, you're obscene!''. Could as easily apply to Dorian's unabashed homosexuality as anything else. Plus, he isn't always Mr. Nice Guy, not when pushed-- or when Klaus is threatened/insulted))
The Highwayman- Loreena McKennitt (Yes, the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem, set to music and sung by a woman with a downright gorgeous voice. I used the poem as fic inspiration, and I can also see Dorian being a fan of it, because it's very romantic and tragic and lovely that way. And, you know, about a highwayman)
Greensleeves- Loreena McKennitt (Very English, of course, but it opens with 'Alas, my love, you do me wrong, to cast me off discourteously, And I have loved you, oh so long, delighting in your company', which seemed very Dorian-to-Klaus.)
Deadly Handsome Man- Marcy's Playground (it's sexy and prowl-y and fun, a flirtation with a beat you can dance to. 'My lucky number's sixty-nine' 'I'm independant, smooth and confident, always in demand' 'I'm a deadly handsome man, I'm the lion and the lamb')
Giving It Up For Love- Boy Meets Boy ('the life of gay abandon, of excursions and alarms... the right to spend each evening in a brand new fella's arms, imagine giving all of it up for love' 'We can imagine giving all of it up for lent, but heavens above! Imagine giving it up for love!'-- the throne has just been abdicated, and two characters sing about how they can't imagine giving the good life up just to spend eternity with one person. Then, of course, one of them falls in love. It's a pre-Klaus Dorian viewpoint.)
Jekyll N Hyde- Ella Rouge (For Dorian. 'Lady, Lady, Lady Red, don't be so upset' 'Tried to tell you long ago, but it's too late for Jekyll and Hyde to seperate'. For all the facets of Dorian/Eroica/Lord Gloria. There's also a spoken 'But it's too late, *baby*, so let me introduce you, to Doctor Jekyll, and Mister Hyde!', which I find awesome)
Into the Fire- The Scarlet Pimpernel (the last Dorian song-- after this, it's the Klaus songs. This is the Pimpernel's big number from the first act, the 'look alive, boys' go-get-'em song where he rallies his men into action. It's very inspirational and dramatic. When I listen to it, I totally see Dorian at the prow of the fishing vessel ready to take on Klaus and NATO in Alaska. Also, this transitions perfectly into Klaus' first song...)
Falcon In the Dive- The Scarlet Pimpernel (This is, of course, the 'bad guy' song, but unlike the book, where he's pure evil, in the musical, he's very human, and this song illustrates how he feels he is doing his duty to protect his city and country from a vile threat. 'Hunt for this man, comb the city, every street every grate, you put a guard at every gate, drag him out, shout the moment that you find him, DAMN! Knock in the doors, lock up the city, track him down through this town, and be quick about it now! How the devil can I ever prevail, I am only a man, I can never be duped by that scurrilous phantom again!' Very Iron Major-in-pursuit. 'But on my soul, I wasn't born to stoop, to scorn, to knuckle under')
Harder To Breathe- Maroon 5 ('I have the tendency of getting very physical, so watch your step, 'cause if I do, you'll need a miracle' 'You want to stay, but you know very well I want you gone'- parts of this song sound very Klaus-to-Dorian rant-ish. Also, the way the music moves, I see lots of punching and gun-drawing action... 'What you are doing is screwing things up inside my head, You should know better, you never listen to what I said')
Live and Let Die- Paul McCartney (Well, the first criteria is always 'Is it an awesome song?'- check. This song is awesome. And it makes me think of Klaus, which is the second.)
I Am A Rock- Simon and Garfunkel (Klaus, before opening up to Dorian at all. Okay, so maybe he's more of a tank than a rock, but there's no song for that! Klaus is a loner, he's stone cold and needs no one! Or is he just lying to himself waiting for the sexual awakening that is Dorian to happen to him?)
Gott ist Tot- Tanz der Vampire (The music is by Jim Steinman, though most of the lyrics for the show are not. Yes, it's from a musical about vampires, but bear with me-- the vampire is more than a blood-sucking monster, it's a symbol of awakening sexuality. Usually in the form of a young woman, but in Klaus' case, his desire for Dorian. So the two songs from 'Tanz' I picked for him are the count's overtures. Yeah, I'm getting all psych 101 for this one... but c'mon, vampire seduction rocks. Plus, the tune to this one is the same as 'Original Sin', so it's really good.)
The Wolf At Your Door- MeatLoaf (MeatLoaf ROCKS. Not 'nuff said? Okay- 'Work so hard to do what is right, believed in what you're doing...' 'The wolf at your door, he wants your money wants your soul, the wolf at your door, you give it all, he wants more. The wolf at your door, he says he's playing for keeps, breathing down your neck, boy it's sure hard to sleep, with a wolf at your door' 'You're not guilty, you are the victim, but you still pay for the crime. Don't look for trouble, it'll always find you in time' 'I won't be broken'. On the one hand, Klaus leads a pretty hard life and there's definitely at least one wolf at his door. On the other hand, he's the wolf at a lot of doors himself. I refuse to make it a cutesy chapter-related reference to the wolves in Alaska, though. That's where I draw the line.)
Trigger Happy- Weird Al (How could I leave it out? 'There's no feeling any greater than to, Shoot first and ask questions later' 'I gotta be ready if the commies attack us tonight! I'll blow their brains out with my Smith and Wesson, that oughtta teach 'em all a darn good lesson' (there's also a bit about mistaking his father for a drug-crazed nazi and shooting him, but Klaus would never make that mistake) 'Got a brand-new semi-automatic weapon with a laser sight, Oh I'm praying somebody tries to break in here tonight.I always keep a Magnum in my trunk, you better ask yourself do you feel lucky, punk?'-- it's just so gun-nut!Klaus)
Eindalung Zum Ball- Tanz der Vampire (which I'm hoping I spelled okay from memory... The other vampire seduction song, or, for my purposes, the other awakening-sexuality-causing-problems song. This one is a clear invitation from the count (or, Klaus' sex drive) to the innocent virgin (Klaus totally repressive super-ego). And again, the music is just beautiful. Again, a lot of it is the same as 'Original Sin', but with different lyrics. I'm obsessed with this show right now, best composer ever.)
His Name Is Lancelot- Spamalot (Okay, so normally I wouldn't associate Klaus with 'showtunes' or 'disco beats', but... in this song, Sir Lancelot, previously just a very violent knight, gets shoved out of the closet, much to his own surprise. It made me giggle to equate it with Klaus.)
Being Alive- Mandy Patinkin (Sure, you could get one of the cast recordings of Company for this song, but Mandy Patinkin rules my world, so my pick is his version. This is the Klaus-comes-around-and-realizes-he-needs/l
Anyone Can Whistle- Mandy Patinkin (again, you could go to a cast recording from Anyone Can Whistle. Mandy pwns. 'Anyone can whistle, that's what they say. Easy. Anyone can whistle, any old day, Easy. It's all so simple, Relax, let go, let fly. So someone tell me why Can't I?' 'I could slay a dragon, Any old week, Easy. What's hard is simple, what's natural comes hard' 'Maybe you could show me how to let go, lower my guard, learn to be free. And maybe if you whistle, Whistle for me'. Klaus is more tank than man in many situations. Normal 'fun' things aren't part of his vocabulary.)
Knights of Cyclonia- Muse (Okay, first of all, I will defend prog rock to all comers! I didn't think this song would wind up on the playlist even though I enjoy it, but then I was listening to the lyrics again and... 'Don't waste your time, Or time will waste you' 'No one's gonna take me alive, Time has come to make things right. You and I must fight for our rights, You and I must fight to survive.' PS, Klaus would be an awesome knight. You know it's true.)

Anyway, that's the first playlist-- the seperate songs for Dorian and Klaus. There's also a playlist that charts their relationship, and a third bonus playlist that covers everything else (including all my James songs, for any fans of Our Jamesie)
