They're watching you,
Ben walked down the street, he didn't look out of place in his suit, especially on a Friday afternoon. While the sidewalks were not overly crowded they weren’t empty either, there were still plenty of people out in the streets, going about their business. He knew that in pretty much every city (and even some large towns) there was at least one of these ‘underground clinics’, somewhere mutants could go if they needed medical assistance. While most of them had those who were able to work on the physical injuries and illnesses, Ben knew from experience that there was almost as much need for psychological assistance and he wanted to offer his services, as he had done in many clinics since he became certified to practice. Back in Canada most health services were free for all (human or mutant) and it surprised him that here in the US simple things like getting a deep cut stitched up, bone set or medication for whatever condition could cost someone hundreds of dollars, if not more and that didn’t sit right for him. Everyone deserved healthcare, not just those who could afford it.
Again the word of mouth about the location of this clinic didn’t come from humans, he had put word out to his slowly growing army of animal ‘spies’ with what to look and listen out for, and much to his surprise it only took about three days before they gave a location. After scoping out this Galen, he went inside to make an appointment with the owner. Now - the next day - he returned dressed for an interview with his resume, registration papers and references in a messenger bag, Ben opened the door and walked into the building. The lady behind the desk recognized him, called the owner to announce his arrival and then gave him the directions to the main office.
Interviews are always nerve wracking, even for voluntary positions like this. The owner had put his mind at ease and Ben felt that it had gone well and had given the owner a schedule outlining his availability and mentioned that he was usually available for emergency consults if needed, he didn’t mind getting a call in the middle of the night if someone was going to hurt themselves or others. He wasn’t doing this for the money, the costs associated with his rented apartment were covered, Ben didn’t know who exactly was paying the bills and funding his research but he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. As long as he kept his promise and sent regular emails of his research and case studies his benefactor would be happy.
