Jennifer was having a bad day. It had started that morning when the power to her small studio apartment had blipped out while she was sleeping the night before which had caused her alarm not to go off in the morning when she had to get up for work. That resulted in a frantic rush once she awoke and realized there was far too much sun streaming into her tiny apartment. Her phone had been snatched up and she’d rushed out the door as quickly as she could leaving her gloves, hat and metrocard by the door. Thankfully, she had enough money to buy another metrocard - barely, no trip to the makeup counter for her this weekend - but that meant screwing up the entire line of people attempting to get to the trains and being even more late since she’d missed the train she needed to catch while buying the replacement transit card. Unfortunately for Jennifer that wouldn’t be the end of her bad luck today. Upon getting into work - two hours late - she was promptly pulled aside and chewed out extensively by her boss. The continued beratement of how there were easily ten other people that would take her job in a heartbeat and wouldn’t be half as useless as she clearly continued to be would last thirty minutes before her boss would growl at her to get out there and do her damn job before her ass was fired. However, that wasn’t before Jennifer was informed that she was being written up twice - once for so late, and once for her disrespect - but she ought to thank her lucky stars she had a nice ass or her boss would have had to let her go right there. The entire ordeal was humiliating and enraging but with how competitive the job market was in the area and the obscene cost of living Jennifer couldn’t afford to lose this job. Not right now. Not with her rent due next week and the fact that she was living paycheck to paycheck to begin with. ‘Grin and bare it.’ She could hear her mother’s advice playing through her head throughout her work day where no less than three customers made her life incredibly difficult and threatened to call her manager which considering her altercation with him that morning it was the last thing she needed today. When work was done all she wanted to do was get a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, go home, and cry. Yet, there would be no room for tears as she still needed to make it home, cook dinner - probably cheap ramen with an egg and some spinach - finish up her coursework for the night, and try to get everything together that she’d need for her presentation in two days and… A wolf whistle pierced the surprisingly warm night air and she instantly felt her insides freeze up. “Hey hot stuff, you need a ride?” The pick-up line from a random strange dude on the sidewalk who was already sticking out his tongue between the V-shape his fingers were making and thrusting his hips was really not what her day needed. The worse part? He had friends with him who were encouraging the behavior by laughing and giving their own wolf whistles. “No… No thank you.” Came the weak response. Jesus fucking christ this day just needed to end and hopefully if she just kept walking they’d leave her alone. “Aww, com’mon baby, I got what you need.” The man grabbed at his own crotch with a grin. “Give you a smile that’ll last for days.” “Yeah, come on! Give us a smile.” Chimed in one of his buddies. She just needed to get by them and get home. She had ice cream in the freezer. The thoughts would start repeating in her head like a mantra. The ideas gave her something to cling to, something to mentally guard herself with and something she could use as a shield as she tried to walk by the group of men - there was no other way past - when a hand shot out and one of them grabbed her upper arm in a vice like hold. “I said I can give you a smile.” It was the first asshole but now he wasn’t playful or brash he was direct and aggressive sounding. Seemingly upset that his gross advances were being declined. “When someone offers to give you something you should take the gift with a smile.” His voice was nearly a growl and a couple of his buddies laughed uproariously. “And I said no thank you.” Jennifer would never have recognized her own voice as it lowered ominously and she could feel the building up of her power inside of her, threatening to lash out. “Now let me go.” The statement was clear, direct. “Or what? You gonna call my momma?” The man snapped back angrily. “No, but you’re gonna wish I did.” Jennifer’s eyes glowed orange and the man startled, still holding onto her arm he seemed at a loss for what was happening but at least had enough common sense to recognize he should be scared as his body was frozen in place. “Let go of me!’ Was the yell Jennifer offered as she felt the tumultuous battle to control her powers inside of herself beginning to break, beginning to lose. A wild jerk of her arm in attempt to free it was all it took to accidently let loose a huge plasma blast from her fingertips that soared past the group and collided with the brownstone apartment building. The blast began immediately melting through the brick wall and continued to slice deeper into the building destroying walls and belongings until hitting a major support structure causing the structure to begin to collapse as fire started overtaking the building simultaneously. Seeing the sheer destructive force caused by the lashback the men responsible for inciting the incident instantly scattered leaving Jennifer standing there in horror and shock of what her powers had just caused. |
