RP: Harry & Teddy
Who: Harry & Teddy
When: Day 48 (May 9th)
Where: Corridor
What: They talk about yesterday
Teddy had stayed by Jamie’s side the day before, not wanting to stray too far from his side. Whilst Snape was worried about him and wanted to keep checking on him, Teddy wasn’t happy about this injury. No matter what Jamie said, this was very different from a Quidditch match and how he was patched up and sent home with various potions to take that would get him fighting fit within a couple of days.
It was the next day before he came across Harry in the corridor and although his annoyance had dimmed slightly, it came back with a vengeance when he saw the other man. Teddy would let a lot go and it took a lot to truly bother him but this was something he couldn’t leave. He raised his wand because he really wasn’t sure if he wanted to hex him or talk to him.
“Harry, back off-”
“I know what you’re going to say,” Harry interrupted, having… Not avoided Teddy because Harry didn’t really avoid anybody but he’d certainly thought that yesterday it wasn’t his place to sit next to Jamie and apologise for the entire day. And Harry suspected that Teddy wouldn’t forgive him as easily as Jamie would. “I’m sorry, Teddy. I didn’t mean to get him hurt-”
“You never mean to,” Teddy snapped, moving to lean against the wall. “You never mean to, you always want to do the right thing and I get it, I get that you wanted to try and find these wizards but you had Jamie and Scorpius with you. You let Jamie get hurt and he could have been killed, he still could die. No amount of Hermione and Ron justifying this or telling you that it’s okay is going to make me forget what you did.”
Harry scowled because whilst he’d accept that he’d been an idiot, and Ron partly too, Hermione wasn’t involved in this. Hermione had been furious. “Hermione and Ron aren’t justifying anything. Hermione’s so angry at me for this and I didn’t even sleep in the same room as Malfoy last night.” No, he’d ended up on one of the spare mattresses because he didn’t know if he was welcome in their room or not.
“Oh, wake up!” Teddy exclaimed. “She’ll forgive you because she’s your best friend. Draco will forgive you because he’s your partner. Hell, Jamie will even forgive you because he doesn’t expect anything from you.”
“So what, Teddy? What do you want? For them to not forgive me?” Harry asked, looking supremely uncomfortable. He wasn’t used to not being able to justify his actions and he knew that this time he’d crossed some sort of line. He’d gotten civilians hurt as an adult and that wasn’t something he’d done since his antics at Hogwarts.
“It’s not that easy. I want you to apologise to Jamie, I want you to show up and be a proper father, I want you to care,” Teddy said, sighing. “But I don’t think you will do any of those.”
Harry shook his head. “I’ll apologise but you’re wrong in thinking that I don’t care. I do care. I care about all of my kids and I know you know that.”
“I think you like the idea of caring,” Teddy amended after a moment’s pause to collect his thoughts because this conversation wasn’t the one he’d expected to have. Hexing his father-in-law sounded like a better option right now.. “I think you like the idea of being a dad. I don’t think you realise what it entails. It’s not just saying it, promising that you care. It’s being there for Jamie, for Al, for Lily always, not just when it suits you. You know Jamie considers my being by his side when he’s hurt spoiling him? He doesn’t realise that somebody being there for him unconditionally is something he should have always had. You should have been there for him, Ginny should have been there too. Al and Lily always relied on Jamie to be there for them and Jamie had nobody.”
Harry stepped back slightly, taken aback. “I am there for him. I know I’ve been terrible in the past and I know I wasn’t there enough when they were younger but I’ve tried. I’ve been better in the past few months.”
Teddy shook his head because he didn’t buy that one little bit. “And yet it took one trip out for you to forget that you shouldn’t have gotten Jamie and Scorpius involved in whatever adventure you and Ron-
“No,” Harry replied firmly, shaking his head and looking annoyed. “No, I told them to stay back. Ron told them to stay back too. I didn’t think they’d follow us and start firing hexes back. Teddy, you can’t think that.”
Teddy was silent as he considered it. “I think you said it, I don’t think you expected Jamie to stay back and if you did, it’s like you don’t know him at all. Jamie is so like you when it comes to doing the right thing but I don’t think he’d put himself in danger unnecessarily. I hope he wouldn’t because I want him around for a long time. So I’m going to just say it, if you hurt Jamie again, even indirectly, I will hex the absolute shit out of you and then we’re done.”
Harry looked at Teddy, incredulous. “You’re joking. You have to be jok-”
“No,” Teddy, shaking his head and cutting him off. “It takes a lot for me to break with somebody, you know that, and you’ve been around my entire life but Jamie’s more important and Merlin, I want to hex you right now.”
“Teddy…” Harry trailed off, not sure what he could say that would fix this. It had to be fixed, he knew that.
“And you have nothing to say. Why am I surprised?” Teddy said with a groan. Jamie would no doubt be laugh about this and ask him what he expected. “Talk to your son, apologise to him. That’s the least you can do. Right now… Right now, I need to not talk to you for a bit.”
Harry stepped forward, grabbing Teddy’s arm as he turned to walk away and Teddy went rigid, looking back at him with a mixture of annoyance and hurt. “I’ll fix this. I’ll work out how to fix it, Teddy.”
“Whatever you think needs fixing has been broken for years,” Teddy said, pulling away but not ungently. “You need to work out what you want and what you can give and don’t promise more than that, Harry. Now I need to go and see if Jamie wants to shower. I’ll… See you around.”
Two minutes later, Harry was still in the corridor, wrapped in his own thoughts. What did Teddy mean by what he could give? And what… What did he want?
