Coming home in a box To understand why the 1960s were so whacky and unruly, you'd have to remember the ominous feeling of doom that hung over most young men in those years. When a boy hit 18, he was required by law to register with the Selective Service Board. His draft number was entered in a national lottery and if his number was selected, he would receive a letter ("Greetings!")and off to war he would go. There were exemptions, if he had a medical condition or dependents or was in college. But for most, he would get shipped out or go to prison for resisting. ("Draft dodger" was as hateful an epithet as any ethnic slur in those days).
The usual number you see is that close to 60,000 young men were killed in Viet Nam and shipped home to their families. (Many more, of course, came back with a leg gone or part of a face burned off or addicted to painkillers.) All the "crack" of the 1960s, all the silliness and surreal humor of that era can be seen as a reaction to the grim news on TV every night.
Here's Jules Feiffer on the situation, as three Presidents make the same empty speeches.

Lois Lane #55: "Superman's Secret Wife!"
I have a feeling this particular well of Superdickery has a well-beaten path between it and the Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane offices. But... damn.

Light up another one, Tony These clips are from THE AVENGERS# 5, May 1964 and #7, August 1964. Script by Stan Lee, art by Jack Kirby. Tony Stark has to wear the Iron Man chestplate all the time, because it keeps a piece of shrapnel from moving into his heart. When he lets the armor's power run down, that piece of metal instantly starts digging deeper, causing pain, dizziness and weakness. (This didn't seem the way such an injury would actually work, but it was great drama.) We got a lot of panels of a tortured Iron Man crawling doggedly toward an outlet to recharge his chestplate; he was quite the suffering hero, having to use up his power in a fight and then pay for it. Despite having a damaged heart that could only be kept functioning with machinery, the idea of quitting cigarettes didn't seem to occur to Tony, though. Steve Rogers and Bruce Wayne and Reed Richards smoked pipes, Nick Fury and Ben Grimm lit up stogies. But Tony was satisfied with a pack of Lucky Strikes. (I would have loved it if Kirby or an inker had added one panel of Iron Man with a cancer stick protruding from the grille of the Iron Man helmet. Just once.)
1964 might as well be another planet if you're in your twenties today. People smoked EVERYWHERE. Airplanes, restaurants, movie theatres, stadiums. Nobody thought anything of it. People smoked in supermarkets and ground out the butts on the floor. Doctors smoked in their offices. Teachers smoked (but students weren't allowed to). After the Surgeon General started hitting the public over the head with a 2X4 about the dangers of tobacco, habits gradually changed and laws were changed. Today, you see the furtive "cigarette outlaws" sullenly huddled outside buildings on their breaks. But it wasn't always today.

Wally Wood's alien women The cover by Wally Wood to the SPACEMEN 1965 YEARBOOK. This was a short-lived effort from James Warren to branch out from FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND to other genres. He also tried WILDEST WESTERNS, SCREEN THRILLS ILLUSTRATED and MONSTER WORLD with limited success. Warren actually did best with the black and white horror comics magazines... CREEPY, EERIE, VAMPIRELLA, 1984/1994, THE ROOK. Maybe with more commercial than artistic success, to be sure.
Looking over the alien chicks in this astronaut's swinging bachelor pad (you just KNOW he has modern jazz on his stereo), I'm intrigued by the one on the far left with the horse legs and tail. An interesting take on a centaur? Or a reference to the "Horstel" race in Philip Jose Farmer's DARE? Other aliens here remind me a bit of Marvel characters who came along later, namely Storm and Tigra. Also, although it seems our hero really has it made, do not envy him. The green woman is planning to get him alone, shove her ovipositer down his throat and lay her eggs in his thoracic cavity. So he'd better enjoy the situation while he can.

Great Stan Lee dialogue Think about what the Impossible Man is saying in this panel from FANTASTIC FOUR# 11, February 1963 (a thousand years ago).
Stan scripted these stories so quickly, as he was writing and editing nearly the entire Marvel line-up at the time. This gives the scripts much of their adlib, impromptu nature; and once in a while, Stan batted out a line of genius with really giving it much thought.

Silver Age Wonder Woman This is my last Silver Age post. Tomorrow it's back to the Golden Age.
Golden Age Steven Trevor was a cool guy. He wasn't in the least intimidated by the fact that his girlfriend could overpower him with one hand tied behind her back (which it often was), he thought she was the bee's knees. Plus he did plenty of heroic stuff on his own, without any superpowers.
Silver Age Steven Trevor, however, was a dick.

More Silver Age Wonder Woman Crack Via the blog Amazon Princess I found these photos of Wonder Woman and Flash going about their daily lives, grocery shopping, taking care of the kids, etc. I found it kind of amusing. Some material may be NSFW for nudity. No sex or anything, though.
Today's scans are from Wonder Woman #145. The story was 30 pages long.

For a change, Silver Age Wonder Woman crack First, a couple of WW-related cartoons I cut out years ago.
These are from Wonder Woman #129, which is 30 pages long. I believe there are only two issues that featured Wonder Tot's boyfriend Mermite, and this is one of them.
Wonder Tot has her detractors, and it's not surprising; the cutesy way she refers to herself in the third person is highly irritating. (I have never heard any child do this in real life, though one mother on my F-list says her toddler sometimes does it.) However, I have a soft spot for her because she's such a driven little Amazon. While Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl are dithering over their boyfriends, she's honing her warrior skills and seeking adventure.
The canon about the identities of Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot is inconsistent. It seems at first, they were supposed to be Wonder Woman when she was younger. Then they started doing "Impossible Tales" like the one we're about to see by allegedly splicing together film of Diana at different ages. Later on, it seems they dropped this entirely and gave Wonder Woman two younger sisters. I haven't read them in order, so I can't remember if they did this in order or if they switched back and forth; the latter wouldn't surprise me at all.
Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Golden Age Steve Trevor was a cool guy. Silver Age Steve Trevor was a dick.

[Link] | It seems the universe has conspired to make me eat crow. Just last week, I was making such bold pronouncements as, "Marvel's probably a little hesitant to put any more Steranko work out in trade...", only to have the September solicits announce this:
( Click for glorious news! )
No word yet on whether Marvel learned their lesson and is actually paying Steranko this time around, but I've sent off a few e-mails inquiring about that, and I'll keep you posted. I'm a little irked that they're cutting it off at NF #3, just because Steranko's last interior work on the book was in #5, and continued a story started in #1. Seeing as how #4 was a fill-in issue by Frank Springer, I don't see why they couldn't have just put #5 in this volume, and left #4 for a hypothetical next volume. I know the Masterworks are pretty staunchly chronological, but come on.
Anyway, to celebrate, have a picspam of my favorite moments from those issues!
( Unda da cut! )

Fantastic Four #5: "The Fantast Four Meet... DOCTOR DOOM"
I saw a comment from magnetic_regina asking whether the Debut of Doom had been posted, and amazingly, it hasn't. Rectified!
"Prisoners of Doctor Doom!" was published July, 1962. After much deliberation, I narrowed down the preview image to just one of the many crackalicious panels:

Walt Kelly's "Mouse Into Elephant"
What an ODD little story. This first appeared (as far as I can tell) in the 1966 THE POGO POOP BOOK. Walt Kelly took advantage of these collections to publish some of his more offbeat and experimental stories. "Mouse Into Elephant" is fourteen pages long, done in pencil. A mouse named "Gnot-even" is protesting that mice are treated like a minority, while elephants are loved by everyone. "Us mice have to live in holes and eat what we steal-- we're an Oppressed Majority." This mouse goes to Frump, a powerful fairy who seems to be a derelict woman living in an alley and drinking ketchup out the bottle. Frump thinks it's a good idea. She does magic, and mice and elephants switch sizes.
But the mice find people still hate them, and now they're out in the rain with no place to live. Meanwhile the elephants have a career in show business ahead of them (rather exploited, it seems). Gnot-even pleads tearfully to Frump, who restores everything back the way it was. The moral is... well, I'm not sure what the moral is, even if there is one. Frump observes, "We could always deliver a miracle-- but would we want to live with it?"

NUMBHEAD
You get so used to these old kid's comics being so moral and borderline preachy that it kind of surprises me when I find one like this, where the message seems to be one of intolerance and undisguised bigotry.
Hate mongers rejoice! This one's for you!

Wonder Woman + Sylvia Plath I have sad news. My idol, Sylvia Plath, lost her stepson recently. He hanged himself at his home in Alaska. Something tells me Palin had something do to with it. Yeah.......when hell freezes over. Anyway, Frieda Plath claims he had been suffering from depression for quite sometime, something both his late mother AND Assia Wevill both appeared to have, seeing as how they both killed themselves (Assia killed her daughter too.) Well....at least all 5, including Ted can be in heaven together. http://news.aol.com/article/poet-sylvia-plath-son-suicide/393267
