Blue Beetle - The Brave and the Bold 3
Last weekend I visited my first ever comics fair. I'd visited my friendly local comic shop to buy All-Star Superman, and the friendly person at the till asked how I was getting on with Blue Beetle (since I bought 4 trades from them). I mentioned that I had the 4 trades, and some later issues, but was missing some in the middle, so was waiting for the trades. "Have you tried the comics fair?" The comics fair? Why, there's one on today, they might have the issues.

What followed was less scary than I thought, but still rather disconcerting. If only because it wasn't as overwhelming as I thought, and the stallholders were so helpful.

Nobody had any of the issues I was looking for :( but they did pull up issue 3 of The Brave and the Bold (featuring Blue Beetle), which reminded me why I like Blue Beetle.

4 pages-worth of images, illustrating the awesome )

Batman would call this Proof #2681 that Gotham Is Too Much For Superman To Handle
Mark Waid's run on The Brave and the Bold was pretty, pretty crack that gave us some truly unforgettable team-ups.

In The Brave and the Bold #16, the team-up is Superman and Catwoman, and it is awesome. The story takes place in the loose continuity of "a few years ago", so you're encouraged not to nitpick at the continuity too much and just relax and enjoy the crack.

What would you give...
Four scans from Underworld Unleashed, which was written in 1995.

For context: Neron (satanic archvillain) is going around the DCU, attempting to strike bargains with good and bad guys alike, granting them their fondest wish in exchange for... their souls, mostly. (For the 'marriage to the love of their life and their unborn child' version, it's the third door on the right.)

The Scene that Defines Reed Richards
Greetings True Believers! After spending a week singing the praises of Doctor Doom, I'd thought I'd spend a moment on his most accursed foe. Reed Richards. Sometimes a story or scene or even a panel so perfectly defines a character, you kind of want to frame it. Another perfect example is the one Quicksilver X-Factor page by He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. This was posted on the Scans_Daily-That-Was. But I felt that it deserved another round.

These scans are from Fantastic Four #60/489. The story is that Reed has hired a PR firm to power up the image of the FF. So this PR agent follows them around for week and gets to know them. He realizes the true heroic natures of Reed/Sue/Ben and Johnny. But everyone wonders, why did Reed hire them in the first place? Why does he care? Find out.

The world's greatest detective is on the case
Mark Waid's new series The Unknown started recently. Not to be confused with his other new series, Irredeemable, or his company's other new series, Unthinkable. I guess they're on an adjective kick.

Irredeemable #2: More backstory on the Plutonian
Mark Waid brings up one of the chief complaints people have about the way Superman's secret identity is handled (no, not the glasses), as he provides a little more backstory on the Plutonian, the man who went from the world's greatest hero to its worst villain.

How the JLA got its name (!?)
I can never quite figure out if this story is in continuity or not. I suspect that it isn't, but I like it, so it's part of my own personal canon.

Grant Morrison on typecasting and the Internet
The first issue of Mark Waid's new creator-owned superhero comic, Irredeemable, came out yesterday. It's about the world's greatest superhero becoming its greatest supervillain. Anyway, it has an afterword by Grant Morrison, who, in-between praising the book, discusses how society has a strong tendency to typecast not just actors but people in general, inluding writers.

When Wondy was Awesome, part 12 (Against the Id)
Well, we've seen a lot of Diana beating up her friends with our last couple arcs, so let's go back to JLA proper for a bit and watch her save all her friends instead. We're into February of 2001 here (continuity-wise, contemporary with or perhaps a little after Hiketeia, though few years shy of that story by publish date), during the Waid run of JLA v3, and the glory years of the Big Seven League.

Now, despite being one of the strongest JLA writers I've read, Waid has done Diana an injustice or two in his day. (And he wrote "Fairy Tales," which I am not inclined to ever forgive him for). But by the time we get to this point in the JLA, Waid was well past his Kingdom Come foibles and hitting some very good notes with her character - such as during the "Id" arc that I bring today. In which there actually isn't much Diana, but when she is, it's damn well worth noting.

Next time: Diana faces down Darkseid in an OW@W interlude, with pretty, pretty Jimenez art.

The best explanation of Kory/Dick 'ship I've ever seen.
A single panel from the two-page "Origin of Starfire" backup in 52 Week 41.
Now there's a parallel that never occurred to me. )
