Superman: Secret Origin #1
That sound you just heard was a hammer knocking the final nail into the coffin of the 1985 Byrne post-Crisis revamp.

Huh, so Martha's family are German, while Jonathan's ancestors include both the Welsh and Native Americans, according to the underrated mini 'the Kents'

Is it just me or is Pa Kent channeling the old man from the pet cemetary?

If, anyone knows what I'm talking about.

I sort of don't like this Clark.

Or the way he looks out at us.

Wait, if that's normal attire, then why have all the kryptonias we've seen been dressed in black and silver, or togas?

Not a fan of the return of the "alien glass/crystals which just happen to be perfectly shape and size to become spectacle lenses" thing, even less that they actually absorb heat vision.

I'm one of the biggest Superman fans around and am usually pretty bias for anything Super-related but...

...I don't really like this. The dialogue feels stilted with exposition that feels forced and the art doesn't feel "warm" like a small town country or Smallville or the Kent's farm should feel.

Plus, are they a family of half-chipmunks, Clark included? That picture of Clark below the chair lifting makes me think he's going "Durrrr!"

Yeah, I'll be skipping this one. *goes to re-read and enjoy Birthright*

Clark seems to have been merged with a rabbit in a few of those panels-- the buck teeth, the staring eyes, the tiny nose . . .

the art. Ugh.

In general it's okay I guess. But his eyes always make the characters look insane and his teeth aren't great either

Some of this issue has some elements from how the "Superman: The Animated Series" started. Teen!Clark is shown the rocketship and he activates Jor-El and Lara's holographic message on the same day. I know a fair amount of S:TAS made its way into the comic books, but this actually works a little better than Clark not knowing for years and angsting over it.

IIRC, the Clark of the "Lois and Clark" series didn't know about Krypton until the 4th or 5th episode, but wasn't bogged down with angst over not knowing his origins. (L&C also had "Clark wore glasses *before* he decided to wear a costume.")

I'm still hoping we'll get "Clark Kent: World Traveler," as that part of MAN OF STEEL was kept in BIRTHRIGHT.

Eeugh on all fronts. Especially the smiley stuff -- you guys are right, it's definitely Attack Of The Chipmunk People -- and the lower left of scan #2, which reminds me of Alfredo Alcala only not good.

I like the Chloe Sullivan smallville shout-out on pete's cast. Kind of not sure with lana knowing, clark secrete so early. Always been partial to the romantic telling her after graduation version, before exploring the world.

This is adorable but I don't know how I feel about bringing Clark as Superboy back into continuity.

Well, at least is no Jay Garrick saying that Barry Allen made him the Flash. For now.

Only in the official DCU canon. In my own personal canon of awesome, it remains firmly in its place.
Frankly, this story just doesn't have it. It lacks charm, which is too bad, because Geoff Johns can be great at writing charming stuff. (See: Justice Society of America's Intro to the KC Arc and Superman's Up, Up, and Away.)

Though I have to admit that I probably wouldn't like this story better than its predecessors, anyway, since the art is horrendous. Why the heck can't DC hire artists that can actually draw well? I could find about two hundred non-professional artists on deviantart that could do better than this, which is just sad.

You know, say what you want about Geoff's incessant Hal worship and his tendency to be unmerciful with the teen heroes, the man writes good Superman.

Weird. I don't hate this as much as I thought I would. Oh well, give it time I guess.
But I'm not gonna lie, I'm getting a huge kick out of Ma Kent being German-American, so that probably distorts my perception.
Superman ist Deutscher vierten Grades, hurra!

I actually really loved this issue--the writing and the art didn't bother me at all, neck and neck with Detective as my favorite read this week. :)

Also--isn't the tornado bit from the MOS revamp? Really, I don't see this so much as getting rid of MOS all-together, but combining as many versions as possible, which I kinda dig.

I don't mind Frank drawing the adult Clark/Superman as an obvious doppleganger of Chris Reeve. Lots of other artists have done the same. But to give lil'Clark a lil'Chris Reeve face just doesn't work. It just looks creepy and I doubt even Chris looked like that. People have a tendency to grown into their face over time (especially during puberty) not look the same from 10 to 30.
