Entry tags:char: flash/kid flash/wally west, char: robin/nightwing/dick grayson, char: speedy/red arrow/roy harper, char: wonder girl/troia/donna troy, creator: bob haney, creator: jim aparo, era: bronze age, in-joke: crack

Would you like to see Wonder Girl and Wally West Beat Up Batman?

ETA: A forgotten phone usage panel. A very special private phone.

Teenagers in trouble? Who you gonna call?

Batman and the Fabulous Foursome, obviously.

I just love this page o' phones. It's like The Telephone Hour song. Goin' Steady!

Also, I love Donna's brick phone.

And I love that this page explains chop shops.

So the story's about a gang of bad kids, who've had tough times and bad lives. So of course, it's perfect for Batman and a few Teen Titans.

This page, Batman is stymied! Stymied, Buster. Also Robin helpfully points out that Wonder Girl does not need to wear clothes. Thanks, Robin!

Donna and Wally are just great in this story. They go undercover to infiltrate the gang. Check out her shirt. (Hands Off, I'm Mine!)

Donna and Wally end up doing tons of the work in this story, too. Also: phone. This story has a lot of phones. Sometimes Batman is grumpy on the phone.

Other times Robin has to use the phone.

Other, other times, Commissioner Gordon is grumpy on the phone.

Phone moment I forgot to add, and who wouldn't want to see?

The money shot, aka what you've been waiting for:

Donna Troy holding Batman's arms behind his back while Wally West punches him in the face.

(It's all for the bad gang's benefit, of course. Street Cred. Those two new teenage gang members can beat up Batman! They're in!)

Donna gets to use a special power...

Oh no! Don't call Robin a jive turkey. He doesn't like that.

At all.

Then Donna and Wally get to be awesome, but that's not included in this post.

And we all learn a valuable lesson. Thanks, Batman and the Teen Titans!

PS: We know covers lie, but not always...

From Brave and the Bold 149, 1979.
The great Bob Haney and Jim Aparo
Not ever reprinted in the US. I don't know where to look up the UK reprintings.

I love how completely useless Speedy is on the cover.

"Yes! I have used one of my trick arrows to tie up... one leg."

"That's nice, Roy. Now go sit in the corner."

Poor Speedy's pretty much useless in this whole story.
Occasionally, he hangs out with Robin.

Speedy's useless? I love how Robin's just sitting there and telling everyone else to beat up his mentor! XDD

You'd think Batman would know by now that he needs to keep certain thoughts to himself.

Teenagers are so impressionable.

Batman expression on the cover is priceless, but wonder what tactical purpose roy have to tie up only one leg? Ahh brick phone a fab accessory to communicate with you friends and doubles as a great weapon too. :)

I don't think there are phones where he lives and they just put a message in a bottle to communicate with him, unfortunately it got to him too late and when he finally show up everything was over.

"...the bow may make the archer, but you don't need clothes to be a Wonder Girl..."

You can't see Donna's expression but I'm thinking she's going "lolwhut?"

But hey, you don't need pants to be a Robin, either.

"lolwhut?" is perfect.

I read that and my audible response was a loud "YES!". You so know how to entertain me.

"The team's disbanded, Batman--But don't sweat, I'm sure everyone will make an exception for your case!"

Yeah, that doesn't sound AT ALL sarcastic, Dick. If you cut it off there, I'd imagine Batman sitting in the cave, waiting patiently for the Titans to arrive. Alfred prepares sandwiches. Time passes. Batman calls Dick again. No answer. Batman cries quietly in a corner of the batcave.

Why I take such fiendish delight in Batman's misery sometimes, I'll never know. I really do love the big lug, but it's so fun sometimes!

I read it sarcastic at first too..It's interesting to think of Nightwing: Year One in this context, with Batman getting jealous of the Titans claim on Dick.

Since reading this story (I had nearly the same set of scans ready to go), I've loved imagining Wonder Girl using her amazing powers of mimicry at Teen Titans parties.

********
"Oh, no, Aquaman! We're trapped!"
"Hahahahahaha!!"
"Hey, I don't sound like that, do I?"
"You do, Garth! You totally do!"
"All right, let's see how you like it, bow-boy! Donna, do Roy."
"Hey, doll-face, I'm all a-quiver over you."
"HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
"Okay, see, that's different. That's not funny. Everyone stop laughing. I mean it."
*********

And the most wonderful thing about that detail of the story is that it leads...nowhere. The fact that the bad guy is somehow imitating or recording Gordon's voice—completely immaterial to solving the mystery.

Darn it, I hate when that happens! Sorry, I'd have enjoyed your take on it too, as I really just wanted someone to appreciate the oddness of the story with me.

Oh, that's brilliant!:) Now I'm imagining it too:) I especially like the You do! You totally do! and the I mean it. Making fun of Roy for the win! Nice!

You're right about the uselessness of that detail. I don't know if it originally went somewhere, or what. I'm thinking, or what.
