Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2 was more or less setting up the new status quo. The bulk of the issue is about Spider-Man fighting a mother/daughter supervillain team called "The Bombshells" (and I don't know if its' the art, but the daughter looks like she's Molly Hayes' age and she's wearing a pretty skimpy outfit, and it's a little off-putting IMO). The scene I'm posting takes place earlier in the issue.

When I saw that first panel, I went "Who is that? It can't be Kong?" Then I saw the next, and I literally went WTF. I don't know if I like this new look. It's just...not Kong. So that was by far the biggest moment of the issue for me, seeing Kong's new look.

So far I have to say I'm liking the title and the new direction that it's going in. Except, that is, for Kingpin's 'death' in the last issue. But I don't want to get into that now...

Yeah, they began dating during "Death of a Goblin".

Jerks. Anyway, Kitty just let MJ put that damn video on the internet, being 'nice' or 'merciful' towards bullies will only prove to be a disastrous choice to you in the future and I'm speaking from experience.

I don't doubt MJ wanted to help, but with the new anti mutant laws, puting a video of Kitty using her powers on the internet could bring her serious trouble.

She meant well, but she should really abide by Kitty's request in the matter, given the hostility it could stir up.

Does anyone else here think that's kind of OOC for MJ? I can't see her hoarding something like that.

I liked this issue
the art still throws me off a little (I'm just too used to Bagley's stuff), but otherwise it still feels the same, which is nice

still waiting for a damn good explanation for Peter/Gwen though

I miss Bagley too, but I have to say that I've gotten used to Lafuente quicker than I did for Immonen (who wasn't bad, I just didn't get comfortable with his style until his second arc).

I'm not sure how to put this, since I don't want to be super-spoilery, but I think the Peter/Gwen thing is all about Peter Parker being missing. I think that the Peter Parker we have right now is actually "Jessica Drew", the female clone of Peter, who has all his memories and his distinct personality. This means several things,

1. Major shake-ups for the Ultimate universe, ala Ultimatum
2. A genuine Peter Parker in the role of Spider-Man, but not the Peter Parker we're used to
3. A way to spread out Spider-"Person"'s appeal to both genders

Not to mention the actual size of Spider-Man, in the same sort of way that Peter Pan is always played by a woman...

Anyway, that's what I think

Oh no! That poor uneaten Gyro!!!! :o

That principal is a jerk for the detention. And MJ looks unrecognizable herself. I didn't recognize her till Kitty said her name. The glasses and short(er) hair really threw me off.

Why does the principle carry what appears to be either a short baseball or rounders bat for that matter?

"Kitty! Did you phase through Miss Watson's digital video camera? Did you?"

"Yeah, but--"

So has it been shown or explained how or why peter and mj broke up in the ultimate universe?

or is the answer just something along the lines of "editorial mandate"?

Not yet, but it probably will be eventually. I don't think Bendis was forced to do it in this case.

It's probably more Writer's Whim than Editorial Mandate.

Maybe this means Kitty and Peter can get back together! I've always liked that pairing-- they were cute as a basket of puppies and it was a sign that Ultimate continuity didn't have to slavishly retrace 616's footsteps all the time.

But if it's not meant to be, I'll settle for Kitty/Jessica. Who's basically Peter anyway, but with a vagoo.

Teenagers change their look about 5.2 times in the course of high school. I'm not really that surprised by Kong going punk.

Kong's punk look is way more realistic for today's generation than that middle-class rap thing he used to have going on. Being punk is cool as fuck and Kong knows it!

Bendis is killing it on this series
