The Ares/Fury bit was well-written. I fully concede that fact. That being said...
Having read the Ares mini, I'm wondering where the fuck the whole "Ares doesn't know how to be a father" bit came from. He wasn't perfect by any means (the misogyny he displayed was bound to fuck Alex up), but he was a loving, communicative father who only kept one secret from Alexander. I fully grant that it was a big fucking secret, but given the circumstances I cannot fault him for keeping it. Alex discovering that he is a god, combined with Ares achieving some measure of peace with his own issues, should have made things even easier.
I could buy Ares letting Alexander go, especially for the reasons he stated. Threatening Fury with Zeus' wrath? No problem whatsoever. Ares not knowing how to raise Alex? I call bullshit.
