Yay! They're here! :) Saturday sketchcard fun
I've been saving this for the weekend as I think it's the sort of fun thing that seems suited to a Saturday morning over a nice cup of tea (or beverage of choice).
I've just received some new commissioned sketchcards, and I just had to share them (And I've been dying to use this icon too!)
I mentioned a chap named Sonny in this post, and he's the artist who produced these; Sonny Strait, voiceover artist (He voiced Krillin on Dragonball Z amongst others) and artist.
As is my wont, I asked for a variety of subjects, and he came through on all of them better than I could have hoped.
First up was one of my "Robin in peril" themed cards. As I've said before I like to give the artist as much leeway as possible with those (except occasionally mentioning a bad guy) to see what happens. He instantly earned my respect by choosing to use the 60's TV series Mr Freeze, which would never have occurred to me, and making this one such campy fun. Something tells me Dick is probably about to feature in a cliffhanger clinking around in a 30 foot tall gin and tonic like a rather colourful ice-cube whilst Batman, trapped inside a giant cocktail shaker, has to watch :)
As someone commented on seeing it, you can imagine the cheap clear plastic prop they'd have used in the TV show in for this, with the ice supposed to be solid, but Burt's cape hanging down because it's really hollow inside. Love it! :)
This next one is a theme I'll be developing for my collection I think. Doug "Cypher" Ramsey and Warlock, with Warlock forming protective armour around his best friend. I got this one a while back, and when I suggested a couple of ideas for "armour franchise" Warlock might mimic for this card and Sonny picked a completely different one that, again, wouldn't have occurred to me, but should have, so I couldn't be happier. I adore Doug's "Here we go again" look. I think this has a lot of potential for some fun images!
And this last one (Well, two as it's a two-card piece) is just a delight and is DEFINITELY becoming a new gallery theme. For ages I've thought about what a great double act these two would make; both ex-circus acrobats turned committed swashbuckling heroes with a sense of humour about their mission. Both being such good looking guys with killer smiles, and surely candidates for "best derriere" awards in their respective universes, doesn't hurt either. (I HAVE to finish my fic of them meeting for the first time as kids thanks to a BAMF gone a little awry...)
As they are both such versatile heroes they'd work in a lot of art styles and a lot of themes (action, urban, noir, heck, even slash if the artist is so inclined)
As a launch for the theme, this is just awesome, and the little chibi faces are adorable! :) (It looks even better than the scan suggests too)
If you get a chance for a commission from Sonny I can thoroughly recommend him, fast, fun and a darn good artist!
And for legality, another little scene of Dick at the circus, this time performing with Ralph Dibny in DC Comics Presents #58, another pairing I'd like to have see some more examples of though I don't think there's much out there.
And I leave how this ends to your imaginations! :)
