Phonogram Intro- What is a Phonomancer?
This is a bit of a catch up on the first volume of the series, because Volksjager posted some of the latest. This kind of explains the world or Phonogram and gives you a hint of why you might want to buy the original collection (further hint: because it is ace).

Kohl is headed to a feminist rock/riotgrrl music fest, to try to use his esoteric skills to get laid. Something catches up with him.

And leaves him with psychosomatic period cramps and a mysterious quest by way of comeuppance.

Fantastic series. It confused the shit out of me at first, even though I got a lot of the musical references, but after a couple of rereads, I loved how everything you needed to understand the events of the finale, and the plot, was explained as you went along.

Plus, McKelvie's art is godlike. I initially thought it was too simple, but now, I can't imagine anything better, myself.

This is one of the silliest ideas I'd come across in a story, but I like it. That's what scans_daily does to one! I even bought a few issues. :D

Personally, I think the idea of a Retromancer is absolutely hilarious, given some of these rock bands seem to just keep on going, decade after decade, despite how much substance abuse and shit that they indulge in. It's almost like the fan's love for them is literally keeping these old rockers alive, and I think Gillen and McKelvie quite subtly tapped into this, in a way, by suggesting the musicians are aware of this and leech off their crowds deliberately.

It's like saying Lemmy keeps going just because he keeps on playing Ace of Spades to crowds of thousands every year.

If Keith Richards ever stops playing, he will immediately crumble to dust a la the ending of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

This post just confirmed one of the reasons I wasn't as impressed with the first issue of the current series as I was with this - the art, or, more specifically, the colours.

I don't know if it's that it's coloured at all, or simply the style of colouring, but something about the colouring didn't work for me at all.

Someone had posted those first few pages a looong while ago back on the original SD. I bought the trade the week after it came out (I had to wait a week due to finances. I wasn't happy about this ;)

It was Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen who did the very first Phonogram post on scans_daily back on LJ. Wait, actually, it was Warren Ellis that posted a couple of pages, and then me and a few other people urged Gillen and McKelvie to post a few more, they did, and then I did a bunch of Phonogram posts as the first mini progressed. Good times, good times.

I'd heard good things about this on iFanboy, but I don't think I ever saw anything. This looks awesome.
